Why is Halfway called Halfway?

It's halfway between *Rotherham* and Chesterfield; there used to be a stagecoach stopping point there.

And, yes, a lot of places did get called Halfway, when they were a stagecoach stopping-point half-way between two places. A search on google maps will uncover quite a few.

No, it's halfway between Sheffield and Clowne. This discussion has been covered before - but I can't locate the thread.

NB Midway in Derbyshire is similarly called because it is halfway between Burton-on-Trent (in Staffs) and Ashby-de-la-Zouch (in Leics).
