  1. When visiting Sheffield like to pop in the Big Gun well since the soil sports closed the Cannon anyway. It's a typical Sheffield pub basic but has its charms do you recall any past landlords or events ?
  2. When I first read the title I thought someone had been hijacked by a bus driver . I thought lucky sod.
  3. why Not Inn was at 27 Clun Street opened in 1864. ---------- Post added 04-03-2016 at 11:54 ---------- One name that is unusual but I like it was a pub called Cyclops was at 101 Carsile Street opened in 1864 closed 1922.
  4. A few more unusual names: Q in the Corner the pub was somewhere on Paradise Square, Why Not pub perhaps named after a race horse, East House on Spital Hill . Nickname one Shout them down another long gone Paradise Square boozer.
  5. IV always thought the whole project to revamp the flats was too much for one company to do. I know the estate complex is listed but the cost to repair and update them is way too much for one company to do and the longer the flats that are derelict are left the more it will cost to sort out.
  6. I recently went past Park Hill flats and stopped to look at the former Link pub and notice a guy was busy cutting down the overgrowth in front of the pub then he stopped for a break . I asked him what has happened to the Link pub sign as only the outer wooden frame was left he told me that the sign had been thrown away. He also told me that the block that houses the Link has been brought by a company and work is due to start in September 2016 , I always thought that Urban splash were going to do the entire complex perhaps they realised that one company can not do it or fund it. Is Park Hill been spilt up and sold off in parts so will end up been owned by different companies? Also noticed on the railway station side one of the upper floor flats has been burnt out must be only recently?
  7. What effect did the works clousers have on the city for example did a lot of shops and pubs close at a fast rate or slowly over time . If it's possible to recall which steel works were the first to go did the works close gradually over a time or went one after another?
  8. If I remember right the actors walk past it and the pub can be seen in the shot. I don't think theirs any inside shots.
  9. IV read a book called 'Survivor's Of The Steel City' it documents life after the steel works closed during the late 1970s and 1980s . The book follows a few ex steel workers and what happened to them it's interesting reading. How did the city change after the works started to close on a economic and social side , did the East end become a derelict wasteland ( IV seen a few photos of Attercliffe at that time) . Do you think the steel works could have Survived or would have closed anyway?
  10. The Fox House still stands its now painted bright red it's a imposeing building now used as a BB place. In the Full Monty film it is featured in a scene and the signage was still up at that time so it likely to have closed soon after.
  11. That's interesting , Saracens Head has connections to Turkish soldiers so at some point in the pubs life it was renamed Tea Gardens I wonder why ?
  12. At present work is been carried out on the Matilda Tavern . Their was a planning notice tired to a pole and was surprised to see that it will reopen as public house I was expecting to read it been turned into the old favourite apartments? Anyone heard anymore like will it be a real ale house ?
  13. Tea Gardens pub is a unusual name any connection to the Boston tea party I can't really see tea leaves been grow at Sheffield? ---------- Post added 25-02-2016 at 18:25 ---------- I believe that is the nickname of the Victoria due to part of the facade been rounded at the front.
  14. The Carlton alright shuts early at night . I went in last year it's one long room inside.
  15. I'm going to build a time machine for you so can find out for us. Didn't the Hole in the Wall on Savile Street have a nickname something to do with vinager works. Another thing about the HITW pub when you look at photos of the building the left part doesn't match the right part , was the left part originally part of the old vinager works ( gateway) it always looked at strange building?
  16. Go on tell all then? ---------- Post added 23-02-2016 at 21:57 ---------- Their was a pub called Why Not supposedly named after a race horse the same applies to the Who Can Tell pub and the Cossack which was named after a Derby winner in the 1840s.
  17. Iv got a book on Sheffield pubs some of the pubs have some really strange names or even nicknames that now seem odd. Here's a few examples: Gas Tank Tavern, Timber top, Shout them down a nickname for a long gone Paradise Square boozer, White Rails can you name a pub that has had or still does have a odd name?
  18. I don't have any while the club was open only derelict ones, but if you could find out the date the club opened their might be a press report on its opening its likely their might be photos showing the club. Picture Sheffield might have a few too.
  19. Has work begun on demolishing Niche or the buildings around it. Thinking of getting the camera out?
  20. I believe that Underground much later became a short lived gay club called Freedom before going back straight then it closed altogether.
  21. Niche building is coming down the old Heathcotes factory that stood at the back of Niche as already gone. Niche in any case could not be reopened as it had a Crackhouse order on it. Matilda Tavern the last I heard was going to be flats, the building suffered a fire and work stopped on it and was left . I remember the Matilda when it was open two small rooms nice if it did reopen not many places around their.
  22. Thanks I remember him from Niche that would be the late 1990s early 2000s . On YouTube their is a live recording of his djing from 1999 and a later one dated 2010.
  23. A bit of a long shot this , Does anyone remember DJ Andy Spoff who worked at Niche Nightclub for about five years and what happened to him after finishing at Niche. He had blonde hair for a rough guess who would be now in his late 30s early 40s?
  24. [/color] I don't remember the number but I put in the search part Meadowhall Road not Crown pub Same applies for the Bridge just keep going forward with the pages theirs one with the pub open dated c2005 then as a derelict 2007.
  25. Had the same stunt pulled on me so your not alone. Theirs already quite a few books about Sheffield pubs and the Twelve O'Clock pub is mentioned in them it used to be a corner building.
