  1. Due to no movement in First increasing their prices to £1.20, Stagecoach look to have reduced the single student fare back to £1 from Monday, only the 2nd time that this has been done. Lost too much custom to First I assume? Whilst they are at it, it would be nice to reduce the cost of the bus fares for us regular folks. £2.20 for a single from Stocksbridge to Deepcar is an absolute rip-off on the 57, a distance of 6 bus stops (less than a mile!). Amazing how they can manage to reduce fares where First operate but not where they have a monopoly of an area!
  2. What has happened to the once very good and reliable bus service between Stocksbridge and the City Centre. Who would have ever thought that First actually provided a much better, and cheaper service than what we have now with Stagecoach. What has actually happened for the 57/58 once every 10-15 minutes throughout the daytime, to now have been downgraded to 1 per hour and with the double decker vehicles replaced with smaller single decker vehicles at the same time. Surely there is demand for the old 57/58 service to be reintroduced - but would it be used? For those who currently commute along this corridor and are forced to having to change between the tram and bus at Middlewood, would a direct bus be more appealing than the current situation? Be interesting to hear peoples thoughts on this.
  3. I see that from 3rd September, getting from Stocksbridge into the city centre or even Hillsborough is going to be even more of a pain, thanks to Stagecoach reducing the already infrequent 57 service - forcing more people onto the Middlewood tram. Do people not deserve better, rather than been forced onto the tram at Middlewood? How many people who commute or even car drivers, would consider using the bus if it was more frequent (like in the days when First ran the 57/58 services, before Stagecoach poached the custom and forced them to withdraw)?
  4. The councils that have made the 1 August declaration are: Barnsley, Bradford, Calderdale, Craven, Doncaster, East Riding of Yorkshire, Hambleton, Harrogate, Hull, Kirklees, Leeds, North Yorkshire, Richmondshire, Ryedale, Scarborough, Selby and York. It does not include Sheffield and Rotherham. Yorkshire ◾Has a population of more than 5.3m people ◾It is divided into a number of different councils across North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire and East Riding of Yorkshire ◾Leeds is the largest city in Yorkshire with a population of about 775,000, followed by about 570,000 in Sheffield and Bradford with about 530,00 ◾There are eight cities in the county with more than 100,000 people http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-40788868
  5. Conductors are powerless and are told to walk away and avoid confrontation if people refuse to pay. They don't even have a penalty fare or inspectors (these are conductor mentors that are sent out on ticket checking duties, but powerless to make people pay). Generally this is not well known, but is becoming more of an issue that people are just simply refusing to pay and know full well they can get away with it. There was a case with 1 particular gentlemen from the Netherthorpe area that the CPS dropped as they are powerless. The said gentlemen has not even been banned - must like throwing money away! ---------- Post added 02-08-2017 at 22:37 ---------- That's because the tram is on a track and other trams can't overtake.
  6. Yes and all councils in Yorkshire except for Sheffield and Rotherham are backing it. Are we becoming the Socialist Republic of South Yorkshire once again
  7. The latest article from The Star details more information and you can understand Barnsley and Doncaster's view on not wanting to pay again for something which they don't receive any benefit for... http://www.thestar.co.uk/business/sheffield-supertram-debts-to-last-61-years-with-32m-rail-replacement-on-top-1-8672004 "esidents will be paying for Supertram until 2056 – some 61 years after the £240m network opened after spiralling four times over budget, The Star can reveal. Owner, South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, has debts of £179.4m from ‘buying assets’ – a big chunk of which is Supertram. It paid £13.6m in interest in 2016/17. But the debt will still be £35m in 2029 and won’t finally fall to zero until 2056 – 61 years after the network opened in 1995."
  8. Well interestingly it did suffer a £2 million loss last year. So are Stagecoach really going to stump up £2.2 million as requested to maintain the service or just walk away from the contract and leave it to SYPTE (who own the infrastructure). Interesting times ahead it would seem!
  9. Interesting read... http://www.thestar.co.uk/news/costs-row-over-17m-supertram-rail-replacement-1-8661616 "An SYPTE report states rails ‘have not lasted as long as predicted in the 1990s’ and ‘if funding is not secured, parts of the network would close in 2018,’ that would be followed by ‘full network closure in 2018/19’."
  10. Isn't there a clause that can let Stagecoach walk away from their contract in 2018 (full contract should continue until 2024)? The lack of spending on the trams in the last 6-12 months is worrying and the morale of frontline staff is also showing and becoming apparent. The trams are also noticeable quiet, to the extent at peak times there are seats still available on the Yellow line to Meadowhall, something not seen for many many years! ---------- Post added 13-07-2017 at 22:09 ---------- As for the Herdings Park branch - be easier just to catch the 1A/56 buses and have a direct route into town.
  11. But was in the wrong lane to start off with. If we are going by following the road signs right in front of you as we have been told in this thread... :hihi: ---------- Post added 18-05-2017 at 12:07 ---------- By the sounds of it, ignore all lane markings and road markings and drive in which ever lane you want haha
  12. Looking at the footage closely it looks like he was trying to turn left onto the viaduct and probably got confused between M1N and M1S
  13. This is why it's catch 22 but thankfully accidents like this are quite rare at this location as generally people know middle lane is just for A631 Bawtry and M1S. It does need addressing as the lane markings at both lanes are contradictory.
  14. So where exactly should the white car go then? If in the right lane on the approach to the roundabout and then suddenly has to turn left even though the road markings say straight on towards Magna? If you drive this every day like me then you will also know that all cars do what the white car has done. The black car should've stayed in the centre lane which after the Magna turn moves across into the left lane on the roundabout to allow the correct exit for Bawtry and then the M1S.
  15. To anyone who does generally think the white car is at fault I would suggest going to drive through this roundabout and following the signs. You will find almost all cars towards Magna are in the left lane and all the cars in the centre lane are towards Brinsworth or the M1 South - as should be the case. It's just unfortunate that in this case the white car wasn't paying attention to the black car cutting across into their lane. Assuming they could - but in this case assumptions have caused an accident. ---------- Post added 18-05-2017 at 11:42 ---------- You can also get to Rotherham by going through Brinsworth. Maybe road numbers would be more appropriate here? So left could be M1N and A631N (to keep the left lane for left turning vehicles only) and then the centre lane could be A6178, A631 S and M1S?
  16. I drive it daily and coming from Attercliffe across to Rotherham, always use the left lane as is signed. Never seen an issues apart from once when a boy racer got into the middle lane and turned left across the viaduct t-boning another car. I was a witness for the accident and did stop (unlike the dash cam footage) given it was 1am in the morning and the accident was between a group of lads in a Fiat Punto and a lone woman in a Seat Ibiza. I do believe the outcome was the Fiat Punto was at fault and admitted liability at the scene. They did think they were also in the right - due to the road markings on the roundabout its self. This was back around November and still nothing has changed.
  17. Yes logic would say that too. However the Rotherham turn off is classed as a 2nd left turn on this 6 exit roundabout. The confusion lies with the markings on the approach not matching up with those on the roundabout.
  18. So please tell us which car should the white car go in then for Rotherham (Magna). It clearly is signed left lane, yet you and others are saying they should ignore the road markings and just drive in the middle lane to cut across like the black car did - and ultimately cause an accident?
  19. Middle lane has always been just M1S. It's only the left lane that has changed around 2 years ago. Both cars could've avoided it, white car could've held back as you could see the black car was hesitant and unsure. However markings on the road state left for M1N and Rotherham. No less than 50yds away from entering the roundabout. The failure of Highways Agency or Sheffield City Council to communicate this lane change and repainting of the lines is the main cause of the problem. The main issue with this roundabout is quite a number of cars are unfamiliar with the road and not from the local area - visiting the Arena or Meadowhall etc. This is why the main points are M1N and M1S as you stated to start off with - with local traffic then directed at the following markings. Quite a common way to do this - Park Square is a classic example. ---------- Post added 18-05-2017 at 11:11 ---------- If I'm right in thinking, they should go in the middle lane (against road markings) to then cut right infront of the correct lane to then cut off. Might not cut across a white line - but certainly drifting across into another lane...
  20. Indeed so - my thoughts exactly... "But nooooo what about the white lanes on the roundabout, blah blah" ---------- Post added 18-05-2017 at 10:39 ---------- Finally someone with some sense
  21. The main reason for this mess is Sheffield City Council have changed the markings on the approach to the roundabout, yet either have failed to inform Highways Agency or Highways Agency can't be bothered to change the lanes on the roundabout its self. This is where the main confusion lies.
  22. It was the same with the old B&Q Roundabout in Rotherham once R.M.B.C. changed the lane markings with the previously left only lane becoming left and straight ahead just like at Tinsley. Has caused the same problems - although has improved traffic flow drastically.
  23. Nope you're looking at the right junction. It's due to the markings on the roundabout being only for traffic on the roundabout. Needs a cross over line painting to make it clearer from Sheffield Road exit. If not from the area or unfamiliar with the road (or not taking notice of the approach markings) you would indeed assume you could cross over like the black car did. This element of confusion is the reason these near misses happen almost daily (and unfortunately accidents also happen like this).
  24. I take your point on board and agree the lane markings on the roundabout don't tend to match up with the lane markings on the approach to the roundabout along Sheffield Road. However those lane markings on the roundabout are for traffic already on the roundabout and throw traffic onto the viaduct from Shepcote Lane, and then you cut across from the middle to left lane for Rotherham (only when on the roundabout from previous exits). That's how the basics work. These lane markings were changed as previously stated years ago to help reduce traffic congestion along Sheffield Road and has done its job generally well. However on a 6 exit roundabout - logic and indeed highway code states left for left, middle for ahead and right for right. Rotherham (A6178) junction would be classed as a 2nd left turn by all accounts. Also it's not the council at fault - Highways Agency owns and controls Tinsley Roundabout (along with the traffic signals). ---------- Post added 18-05-2017 at 10:24 ---------- That's because the white car was in the correct lane to start with and did nothing wrong. Take a look at the traffic from Sheffield Road towards Magna. 99% use the left lane as that is the correct lane to do so and is also signposted and stated.
  25. Road layout still the same as of yesterday - use this Road daily myself and left lane still signed for M1N and R'ham ?? ---------- Post added 18-05-2017 at 09:08 ---------- To clear something up in an easy to understand way... Left lane: M1N and R'ham (A6178) Middle lane: B'wtry (A631) and M1S Right lane: M1S and Shepcote Lane All clearly signed and posted well in advance of the roundabout...
