  1. The floury breadcakes are nice, don’t think I’ve had one for ages. I remember going to a birthday party in a pub at Loxley, a relative of mine put a large plate of dripping breadcakes on the buffet. She bought the pork dripping in Lincoln, she said it was the best dripping she had tasted. I thought no one would touch them but how wrong I was. People were saying how nice they tasted and asking each other if they had tried the dripping breadcakes. Most people said they didn’t eat dripping because of health reasons. What’s that saying, eating bad foods in moderation doesn’t hurt you. I use to go to a fish and chip shop in the centre of Barnsley because my mum liked their fish. They did a decent Sheffield fishcake, not the best I’ve tasted tho, but that was a few years ago. Same here in Newcastle but without the batter.
  2. Living in Newcastle I also miss the Sheffield fishcake they don’t sell them in fish shops up here. Before lockdown last year I would visit Sheffield once a month so it wasn’t to bad. When I lived in Sheffield and visited Newcastle I use to love going into a cafe and having a ham sandwich with pease pudding on a stottie cake, I still do. It’s nice how different parts of the UK have their own traditional food.
  3. Yes, I was going to say one good thing about having it at Hillsborough it’s on the tram route and I agree you do need to take parking into consideration. But I don’t think it should be in the same park each year. It would be nice to move it around if the show ever got the go ahead by the council.
  4. I’m also not a fantastic cook. Like Dales I’ve also had a few tips and recipes from Firethorn and other posters on the foodie thread. Also I love to read Firethorn’s posts when he talks about past memories and experiences. Back on topic. I use to like my mum’s corned beef hash but it was very basic compared to Firethorn’s recipes. Like me she also wasn’t a very good cook. Corned beef is tasty and I’ve alway got a few tins in my cupboard, it use to be classed as a poor man’s meal years ago. The last time I had corned beef, last week, I had it with mashed potatoes, carrots and peas. With slices of corned beef on top. I made a thick onion gravy and spooned it over the corned beef and potatoes. It wasn’t a corned beef hash but it was tasty when the hot gravy slightly melted the corned beef.
  5. I didn’t like Chico, that saying got on my nerves, It’s Chico time. I can’t remember him at Sharon’s house, although I knew she did put him through, probably because I didn’t watch him performing. That was a silly thing to do, jump in a fountain of water with his electrical microphone attached. He could have gone out with a shock exit earlier than expected. And yes there was some good singers who were sent home. It makes you wonder what the judges are looking for when they put some of the singers through who can’t even sing.
  6. I agree with you. I’m also pleased the show has ended. I stopped watching it a long time ago.
  7. I went a few times to the show with my mum and dad, think it was in the 80’s at Hillsborough Park. The armed forces was there doing demonstrations, they were really good, but Sheffield council banned them from future events, can’t remember why, something to do with it not being suitable for a family day out. My dad was furious and didn’t go again after that. If it should return why not move it to different parks each year so all parks such as Longley Park and Parson Cross Park has has a chance to host it.
  8. Not sure if we have soft, medium or hard water here in Northumberland but I get limescale in my kettle. I think you get it if the water is hard. Don’t think I got it when I lived in Sheffield so could that be because the water is soft? I can’t remember hearing people using mash or brew very often when I lived in Sheffield. When I’m visiting Sheffield now, it’s would you like a tea or coffee?
  9. Yes it is true his son did commit suicide. It was Dr Peter Panniker who committed suicide. He took an overdose of tablets in a hotel just off the M1 motorway near Leeds. His son Richard Panniker was at medical school when it happened took over the practice when he qualified as a Doctor, he has since retired. I can’t remember Peter Panniker very well but I was told he was a good Doctor. I remember going into the surgery with my mum a few weeks after Peter’s death to see Doctor Claire who was Peter’s wife. The Receptionist asked everyone not to mention his death to her when they were called in to see her. It was her first week back at work after his death. She only returned to work until her son Richard qualified as a Doctor and was able to take over the practice with his wife who was also a Doctor. All three generations of Pannikers were good Doctor’s.
  10. I think I might be with you on this one. Apart from the better services that Chesterfield residents supposedly receive from their council. How would it affect the price of property if Sheffield was in the county of North Derbyshire. It might be a better selling point especially to southerners wanting to move further north. Sheffield South Yorkshire or Sheffield North Derbyshire the home of The Peak District. Which sounds better?
  11. I’m well aware of the pesky seagulls at Whitby. You need to hold on to your fish and chips and ice creams if you are eating them outside. I don’t think I would feed them, you’ll have a pack of them surrounding you and I think they become extra aggressive fighting for the food.
  12. Thank you. I’ll make a note of that.
  13. I was very disappointed when I had take away fish and chips from The Maggie Cafe. I’ve tasted a lot better. Before lockdown I use to go to Whitby quite a lot for the day off season. It’s well serviced by buses from where I live. With all the fish and chips shops in Whitby I nearly always end up going to Wetherspoons for lunch. There is a nice view of the Harbour. I agree with Baron99, if you are on a tight budget and especially if you have children get your fish and chips in the town centre
  14. I live in Newcastle and it is over a year since I last saw Park Hill Flats.. I have to agree with you they did look a lot better. Next time I’m in Sheffield I’ll take more notice.
  15. I thought he would be at the top of the list on the sex offenders Register. This loophole needs to end. They need every safeguard there is for criminals like Pitchfork.
  16. I’m sure the council originally wanted to pull the flats down but when they were given listed building status that put a stop to their plans. It’s at the back of my mind that the council tried to appeal against the decision to stop Park Hill flats from becoming a listed building. Probably because they would have to carry on maintaining the building. Someone on here might know more about that though. It probably was an easier option, because of the cost to modernise the flats, to give them to a developer. Hopefully it will improve the area. I also hope you are happy in your new home. It will be very handy for you if you work in the City Centre.
  17. I have to agree they do look awful and I also thought they needed knocking down, but I’m not sure the council can knock then down as they are a grade 2 listed building.
  18. There’s Kelly’s directory, I’m sure that lists businesses. If the Library is open in Sheffield they might have old telephone books or they could point you in the right direction to help your research. Good luck.
  19. That’s just what I thought to. Can’t do with films that ends with a cliffhanger.
  20. The Italian Job It’s the one with Michael Cain in it. I’ve watched the end of this film a few times but I’ve never really watched the film all the way through. Although I knew how the film was going to end I enjoyed it. It would be nice to know how they resolved their problem at the end of the film. I don’t like cliffhangers. 6/10
  21. I wouldn’t rehabilitate men like Pitchfork. I don’t believe it’s full proof for everyone. Sorry to disappoint you but I would keep Pitchfork in prison longer than 33 years.
  22. Newcastle John Lewis isn’t exactly full of customers in the day time either. When JL announced store closures I fully expected the Newcastle one to be on their list, but I was wrong. Leeds and Newcastle city centre shops stay open after 6 pm six days a week. If the weather is decent Leeds and Newcastle is buzzing with shoppers, can you say the same about Sheffield shops in the evening. That’s when JL will be picking up extra trade in both cities.
  23. I might be a vile disgusting human being in your eyes. That I can live with, but if I had killed a child even if it was by accident I don’t feel I could live with that. How do you rehabilitate someone who has rapped a women and then murdered and rapped two 15 year old girls? Let’s hope he hasn’t fooled the Parole Board with all the good work he has done in prison into thinking he is no longer a danger to young girls when he is released.
  24. How many more children would he have murdered if he hadn’t been caught? They say he has been rehabilitated what ever that means. If this is the case and he’s now a changed man how can he live with the enormity of his crimes? He should take himself off to a high cliff somewhere near the sea and jump of it, then I will believe he really was a changed man who was unable to live with heinous crimes he had committed against children.
