Eric Arthur
If everyone had a government issued ID number displayed on their person every time that they left the house, maybe on a tabard, or a patch, or a big badge would it eliminate wrongdoing? spilldig
Short answer is no. Any wrongdoer would be able to circumvent it. Can't really vote on it though because if the government introduced it, then it would have to apply to all so you would have to wear it or break the law, no matter whether you wanted to wear/carry it or not. A tattoo across the forehead in 2 inch high numbers would work...
retep
If you were born in this country surely you already have a number.
Mister M
No - it would be completely wrong, and I'm dead set against the idea.

Ghozer
not "wear" - anyone could see anyone elses number, and get any info on said person just by remembering the number.... we already have a unique number assigned to us individually, (your National Insurance number) - what's the problem with just changing this into an ID number, and your NI card has a photo, fingerprint, address, DOB, and bio-metrics on it..... (photo/address/DOB required, the others voluntary) people would only have to remember their NIno, then any official (police, hospitals etc) could get FULL details using the NIno, but other places (such as for age checks when buying alcohol, or getting into clubs etc) only see a name/photo and age (not even date of birth) it would be a relatively easy system to implement, as 1/2 the infrastructure is already there....
