Wildcat
;6919015']Hybridised nuclear power is the way to go... screw greenpeace and their one time anti nuclear slant. If we wish to reduce carbon emissions then this is the way to go' date=' not some overblown scheme to rely on wind power when the wind itself is unreliable.[/quote'] We need a balanced energy policy, with space for wind and wave farms, nuclear and coal. convert
Well the loony envirolentalists are at it again. Environmental campaigners have called for a scheme which gives free coal to thousands of former British Coal miners in South Yorkshire to be scrapped. Much better to subsidise this coal rather then windymills. http://www.thestar.co.uk/news/Attack-on-miners39-free-coal.6632989.jp

spinac
Of course it is one of the predictions of GLOBAL warming that there will be LOCAL cooling. "The UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) ... concluded that there is more than a 90 per cent chance that the MOC [Meridional Ocean Circulation or Gulf Stream] will weaken gradually over the 21st century in response to increasing greenhouse gases. " "Some scenarios suggest that with further climate change, the MOC could ‘shut down’. If this were to happen, average temperatures in the UK would drop by about four degrees centigrade." http://www.idea.gov.uk/idk/core/page.do?pageId=9574626 I'm sure what we're experiencing now is natural variation, but in future we may have to get used to the UK being colder as the world gets warmer. Wildcat
Interesting article in the New York Times. Including: As a result of recent calculations that take the changes into account, many scientists now say that sea level is likely to rise perhaps three feet by 2100 — an increase that, should it come to pass, would pose a threat to coastal regions the world over. And the calculations suggest that the rise could conceivably exceed six feet, which would put thousands of square miles of the American coastline under water and would probably displace tens of millions of people in Asia. The scientists say that a rise of even three feet would inundate low-lying lands in many countries, rendering some areas uninhabitable. It would cause coastal flooding of the sort that now happens once or twice a century to occur every few years. It would cause much faster erosion of beaches, barrier islands and marshes. It would contaminate fresh water supplies with salt. In the United States, parts of the East Coast and Gulf Coast would be hit hard. In New York, coastal flooding could become routine, with large parts of Queens and Brooklyn especially vulnerable. About 15 percent of the urbanized land in the Miami region could be inundated. The ocean could encroach more than a mile inland in parts of North Carolina. Abroad, some of the world’s great cities — London, Cairo, Bangkok, Venice and Shanghai among them — would be critically endangered by a three-foot rise in the sea. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/14/science/earth/14ice.html?_r=1&src=me&ref=general

Near the bottom, it reported a temperature of 40 degrees. It was the latest in a string of troubling measurements showing that the water was warm enough to melt glaciers rapidly from below. The tense pilot said "has anyone seen my thermos flask"
Berberis
First of all it was the hole in the ozone layer that was going to kill us all Then it was acid rain Then is was global warming which will melt the icecaps and heat the planet Now its still global warning but it seems to mean its going to get colder Do these scientists think we are all thick or something? A) that is why we banned CFCs. The hole in the Ozone layer now in the Southern Hemisphere is the largest it has ever been, but thanks to the ban it is expected to reduce in the next 20 years. http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/story?id=119899&page=1 B) which is why power plants now use Flue gas desulfurization and cars use catalytic converters. C) the ice caps are melting. By the way WattsUpWithThat's predictions have been shown to be false: http://climatecrocks.com/2010/11/22/watts-up-with-sea-ice/ Scientists probably have a range of opinions on whether people are thick or not. Which would be a fair assessment, some are some aren't.

I was highlighting the fact that even in our own lifetime there have been many different end of the world scenarios sold to the general public that have not come true. The fact remains that every generation had its apocalypse predictions. Every civilisation had one from the dawn of time but we are still here and we are not going anywhere.
