chem1st
What presents are good for children? Not expensive, fashionable, nor influenced by the media. Just a good present, with educational value of some sort. For boys and girls..
truman
Meccano? A bit old fashioned but helps dexterity, use of simple tools....gives an understanding of engineering principles..helps show how some things work...quite educational really...and you get a working "something" for your efforts.. Shiesh
Hi Orchard toys/games are fab...all three of my kids loved them and spent hours playing them. Most toy/book stores have a small selection but you can buy and read reviews online. http://www.orchardtoys.com/

Farslad
Best present I ever got as a kid: a fishing rod. Got me outside, I learnt about nature, made friends and started a hobby I still carry on today.

vwkittie
I loved Lego as a child. Not the pirate ship kind the proper stuff with motors, cogs etc to make it work. Only problem was getting my dad to let me have a go on Christmas day! I've also always received books for Christmas, from being a small child and still do! They're probably my favourite thing to get actually. I suppose a bike/roller blades is a bit of a cliché but obviously a brilliant present for children, might be a bit expensive though. Maybe arts and crafts sets? As Spiritangel said I bet you could find loads of relatively inexpensive things at somewhere like Hobbycraft. Or jig saws? You can get those huge 3D ones that are pretty cool.
