The Decline Of Sheffield City Centre

Recommended Posts

Starting a new thread as all the others seem near misses.

Thing is, as far as I can see, empty retail spaces are increasing and occupied retail space decreasing. And 'occupied' is host to a growing number of 'take money off the poor' businesses. Betting shops, slot machines, pay-day lenders, pawnbrokers.

Remember we used to have House Of Fraser? Which went to TJ Hughes. Which went to Poundshop. Can't be a more dramatic demo than that of what's happening.

Then again, there are proposals for new office blocks when there must be already thousands (millions?) of sq.ft. of unlet office space already.

And where does that leave the dream (?) of the appallingly-named 'Sevenstone' big city centre development?

Nowhere.

And it's not going to get any better, ever.

Pedestrianisation. Lack of parking. Cost of parking. Inhospitable access. High rates.

Pedestrianisation is limited to Fargate and the Moor.

Lack of parking? There are thousands of places.

Cost of parking? There is loads of cheap parking. There are also things called buses and the tram. And over 10,000 people who live in the city centre.

Inhospitable access? There's a ring road and thousands of vehicles make it into the city centre every day.

High rates? That would be your Tory government that sets business rates.

Had the misfortune of going down the Moor recently....having not been down for years...and what a depressing state of affairs...shops boarded up,large areas demolished, cheap end shops like Poundland,TJ Hughes etc....and former great stores,Debenhams and Atkinsons now a shadow of former glories ....

Its no wonder Meadowhall is booming...free parking, everything under-cover,a decent variation of shops etc...

As someone has previously mentioned, its all very sad....

Old shops demolished to be replaced by a brand new cinema/shopping complex, only in Sheffield can this be moaned about.
