In October 1066, a guy from 'Escafeld' turned up in Harold's army way down in the land of the South Saxons. During a pre-combat inspection the night before he was found carrying nowt but a wooden club. 'We can't have that', said Harold Godwinesson, 'give him a bow and arrow and let's see what he can do'. The lad from Escafeld nervously took the thing, turned his head away and let go. The arrow veered to the left, then right, looped the loop, circled twice and finally landed at Harold's feet. The king turned to one of his aides and whispered:- 'Tomorrow make sure this guy's in the rear rank. The way he performs he'll have sombody's eye out'. That's what I was told anyway.
