Homeless housing

Recommended Posts

just read an article about the homeless. in Madison Wisconsin. where they have built a small community of 50 small wooden houses about the size of a big shed with running water, bed, hob and micro wave for cooking, electricity, heating, this would be a good idea for Sheffield, they could easily find some land near the city centre, some where near the job centre and benefits office, they could pay a pepper corn rent that way they are off the streets there would have to be a supervisor to see that there's not damage or other people staying there it's an idea that the council, police, social services should look at one more thing there should be a booze and drug free community

Hmmm, the idea does on the face of it seem ok, but there are too many variables to contend with.

A good number of the homeless have money, alcohol or drug problems maybe even all, so trusting them to pay any form of rent could be problematic, placing the temporary area close to the town centre could be nightmare and costly, where all the drink fuelled yobs could target the temporary shelters, picking on those less fortunate than themselves, and land prices are at a very high premium.

As for building the temporary shelters out of wood, I could for see problems with fire regulations etc.

It is not the home or shed that will recover them. They have slipped out of society in different ways as well and few of them don't want to come back.

Homeless will increase with a tory government and putting them in sheds like some third world country will not be accepted by the EU.

I agree that no one needs to be homeless today, it is peoples actions and in-actions that have brought them to the homeless conclusion outside of physical and mental welfare. Life is complicated for some with all the bills to juggle and maintain a healthy lifestyle but the services you would expect to act as a safety net don't work.

City centres attract homeless people because night temperatures don't drop as much as in rural areas. With so many reasons for becoming homeless it would take a great deal of funding and would require the populous to have round the clock mentors and wardens.

If homes are well supported then they will work for some. St Wilfrids is trying to raise money for a supported housing project. The charity already has a centre that works with and helps homeless people, so it understands that for many, homelessness is just one of their issues.

This is what they want to do: http://www.stwilfridscentre.org/residential-project
