Heeley Bank School, 1950s

Recommended Posts

I too was at Heeley Bank School from 1950 to 53 in the infants. We then moved further out to the then new estate at Base Green, Gleadless.

I can't remember any of the teachers but I do remember a friend called Paul Spencer and his sister who lived on Heeley Bank Road and attended the same school. Subsequently they moved to Cleethorpes.

I can also recall going to the outside toilets during lesson time and carrying on home ( we lived close by in Midhill Road ) only to be returned with short shrift by my Mum!

The building is still there , but currently boarded up - due for demolition?

I took a photo of it last Christmas just in case!

I was at Heeley Bank from 1952 thru to 58.

I remember Miss Mellaband , Mrs Jones, Miss Benn and Mr Guest and Mrs Linstead.

It was a lovely school and I loved it there.

I was there till 1954. Stockley was a gentleman, Sowerby did his best to get some common sense into us. Goulding was a phsyco who terrorized two generations in our family - must have hated his job as much as he hated the kids.

Simpkins was all about football, and he joined in all the schoolyard games and used to kick a few ankles. Told me how to get my first job.

Goulding and Mr Humpage (in charge of the turnip garden) knew how to lay on the cane, and if we took advantage of the new breed of younger teachers, like miss Benn, Mr Harley and that violin playing other guy who was in love with miss Benn, you would get sent to them.

I was head boy in 1954 and I think Janet Warbuurton was head girl. This meant my schooling was ended at 14, because after that classess seemed to be optional, what with looking after the garden, football gear, milk delivery etc.

Happy days.

Who was the Drama teacher ?

Forgotten her name now, shouldn't though she was the only one to ever give me an "A" in any subject..

Know what you mean about Bill Goulding though, he was my teacher for most of my time there and he just loved me..:shakes:

I think it was Miss Metcalf?

She once slapped me on the face, can't remember why but I know I earned it.
