My Freeview box caught fire!

Recommended Posts

I was in the kitchen last night and my smoke alarm went off,I went into the living room to find smoke coming out of the vents in the top of my freeview box(its a Digilogic from Tesco)It then made a loud pop and a blue flash came out.We unpluged it and put it outside.I took it back to Tesco today and they said that because I had bought it 2 years ago and no longer had the receipt they could only refund £10 off the price of a new one because it had been reduced to that price recently.I think this is really unfair,I dont think that I should have to pay to replace their faulty goods!I declined their offer and said I will take it up with head office instead.Am I being unreasonable?I'm not after compensation I just want the faulty item replaced(although obviously not with the same brand)If any one else has this make of box please unplug it if you go out because I hate to think what could have happened if this had happened while I was out.

Does anyone else think this thread should be in the Entertainment Section......in the bit about "What's hot on TV tonight"?????

Seriously though get in touch with Head Office, explain it to them, say you would EXPECT a freeview box to last longer than 2 years and ask them for a solution....if the solution is not what you would have liked ask them to supply contact details for the manufacturer and approach them along the same lines :D

warrantee's are 1 year unless stated otherwise, and especially if you dont have the reciept....

things like that are so cheap, because they have a life expetancy of between 2 and 4 years, if you get to 5 years your doing well, so to be honest its no surprise they wouldnt swap/refund..

however, the 'catching fire' isnt good, you could have had a power surge, and with the box being a 'cheap' (not £60+) one it wouldnt be as tolerant to a surge....

It doesn’t matter if you have no receipt, or if it is out of its guarantee. It’s about the product being fit for purpose and used within an acceptable period of time. 2 years is not beyond the acceptable lifespan of such a product and it is obviously not fit for purpose.

There will be a serial number on the product, this will be traceable to Tesco as the manufacturer will know which batches are sold and to who.
