Led Zeppelin Over Sheffield

January 2nd, 1973 (altgough they also played at the City Hall in January of 1970). I was there with a bunch of my mates. I was not a great Zep fan at the time (preferring the Stones and Who) but it was quite an experience. We went to many shows at the City Hall from about 1970-1973. The Zep show was the last one I ever went to at that venue. This particular concert was (in)famous because Robert Plant was struck down with vocal problems and could hardly sing. There is actually a recording of the show that circulates among collectors, but it is unfortunately very poor.

This gig also infamous because Bonzo had a second drummer sat behand a curtain at the back of the stage, playing bongos etc.

Still a great gig though...

I've never heard that before. Where did you hear that? I'm surprised Bonham would have needed any extra help; he did pretty well by himself.

I was at the Jan '70 gig - not long after they'd released Led Zep II. Main memories - Page using the violin bow on his guitar during (I think), "Dazed & Confused" and Bonzo's 10 minute or more thrashing of his drumkit during "Moby Dick". Oh, and Robert Plant wailing "baby, baby, baby" in approx 50% of the songs.

I thought they were incredible - but a few a couple of months later I saw Pink Floyd.

this is really amazing to someone like me who has never seen Zep, i got into them after they split, though my significant other saw jimmy page getting out of a helicopter at knebworth in 1980, and took a photo of him... top that!!! but seriously, its a great thread this, imagining them playing sheffield city hall or students union... wow

A lot of legendary band played at the City Hall and the Union in the sixties and seventies. Pink Floyd played 2 or 3 times, the Who about the same number, etc. The only band that never (as far as I remember) came through Sheffield were the Stones. I think the nearest they got was Leeds University in 1971.
