Strix
You don't mean this then: http://www.burngreavemessenger.org.uk/messenger/may2002/castles.shtml And I didn't have time to read all this but it looks interesting to come back to: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/WRY/Sheffield/Sheffield68.html It says: "PITSMOOR, a hamlet in the parish of Sheffield, wapentake of Strafforth and Tickhill, West Riding county York, 1 mile from Sheffield, of which it is a suburb. The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of York, value £300, in the patronage of the crown and bishop alternately. The church is a modern structure." amongst other stuff

Greybeard
ISTR metion in this forum of the possibility of a castle there [in the Tunnels thread?], but I think it's an urban myth. There was a lot of ancient mining activity in the Pitsmoor area, - designated as "Ore Pits" on old maps, and it's possible that when the present housing was built some remains of old buildings associated with the mining activity were supposed to be those of an old castle. The oldest major building in the area is likely to have been Shirecliffe Hall for which I think there are records back to the early 15th. century. No mention of a Pitsmoor castle in Hunter's Hallamshire which, if you're interested in local history, you can by on CDROM for £15 at http://blunham.com/CDroms/index.html

There was / is the remains of an Iron Age fort up on Wincobank Hill, a couple of miles east of Pitsmoor that dates back 2000 years.
