Hi Speedy Pete,

You're right! Mick Swan would make anything which went 'bang', cannons, rockets.

In those days you could buy Potassium Nitrate in any local chemist, so making gunpowder wasn't difficult.

Are there any more Mick Swan memories out there?

Cheers, Wazzie Worrall

If anyone remembers John ( Jack) Evans the art teacher, it was in the Star last week he has just passed away aged 84.

Hi Escort.

I was at Hurlfield 1963-68.  Jack Evans taugh us Art but he also taught us PE. He would also walk us from Hurlfield down City Road to the Park Swimming Baths.

He once gave me a punishment for talking in Art. I had to write an essay on 'Noise Abatement in Modern Society'. He also had a 'Hot Seat' for talking. If you were in the Hot Seat when the bell went you would get the slipper!

He was a popular teacher but I have a memory that he left Hurlfield when I was in the Third Year.

There are Hurlfield School for Boys/Girls pages on the Sheffield Histories - Sheffield Schools. Please add to it.

Cheers, Wazzie Worrall

Went by the school recently and, as well as being called Myrtle Springs now, they have built something on the school fields. Does anyone know what it is. Looks like its cost a few bob! Noticed the East block is still standing, they used to say it was falling down 30 years ago, and the West block is still there and that was even older. What happened to the youth club, is it being used for something else now. That was a great place when it first opened, for those who can remember it had great facilities and even had a disco, with saloon doors and was dark inside like a night club!

I remember this
