Sat in garden with friends having a barby. Strange light appears in sky from West and just before it gets over head goes out leaving a dark shape crossing the sky,

2 minutes later a formation of 6 or 7 more pass over and as the lights go out head off in different directions.

Another minute and another one shows up. As the light went out got a fix on it with binoculars and it looks like a dark globe.

Others must have seen this.

The night is but young and we have hardly started on the booze.

No one abducted so far.

Anyone else seen this.

Aliens. Without a doubt.

They fly over Sheffield on 10th May each year.

Shame you didn't have a camera at hand...

I did have a camera at hand. The first one of the lights came over and we thought it was the police helicopter until the light went out. A couple of minutes late a formation of them came over. They were visible long enough to go inside pick up a camera and binoculars.

A bit later another single one came over.

Not sure the photos help a lot. Not easy photographing lights in the sky when it is pitch black.

Through the binoculars the things looked like black spheres with a spiral of light inside. I suppose they could have been large balloons but were travelling at the speed of a helicopter and going west to east whilst the smoke from the barby was drifting slowly in the opposite direction.

This all happened BEFORE we got onto the wine.

As said above they will have been lanterns. The wind at ground level is rarely if ever the same as the wind above and speed is very difficult to judge as you have no idea of the size or height of the objects.
