Chinese Sky Lanterns/Strange lights in the sky megathread

If I remember my AstroNav correctly, quite a long time ago mind you, the planets are at a maximum of 30 degrees above the horizon, and are always much brighter than any surrounding stars. The bright stars are generally above about 40 degrees. The reason being that the light from the stars is attenuated by the earth's atmosphere at lower declinations.

Feel free to correct any inaccuracies.

me and my friend saw these on saturday night coming back from harrogate to leeds- we did debate what they possibly could be but decided in the end that the most outlandish explainations we could come up with were the most fun.

we did say planets fairly early on...so ive just set her a rather smug email pointing her to this thread!

Just remember that the name "planets" comes from the ancient word to describe "moving stars" or "wandering stars" ,

And 5 of them are easy naked eye,Uranus is just under naked eye (easy in binocs if you know where to look) Neptune is within the average pair of binocs too,but its pretty difficult to see (although not impossible)

I wish the net was around when I started in astronomy :)

JJ..:)
