cosmic0girl
Hi there, I've looked at all the tourist things to do in and around sheff but none of them really appeal, or i've done them before.... wondered if you knew of any unsusual or secret place to visit, can be upt o two hours away cos have car.....want to find some magical gardens and manor houses that aren't too expensive and a nice day out...... I remember someone telling me about this secret garden place about an hour away or so...that some rich man had built in his grounds which took you on a riddled tour of the house and gardens....you had to book in advance but ti was only 7 quid or so to visit.... does that ring any bells with anyone....doubt it!!hehehe anyway, your advice and local knowledge would be much appreciated....plan to venture out this saturday...... cheers :hihi:maz:hihi:
barbiegirl80
Don't know about a 'Secret Garden' but I once visited Haddon Hall near Bakewell and it was amazing.. The house itself isn't really big enough to be considered a 'manor house' but it's sooo beautiful - especially in Summer..
Winemaster
You could try Elsham country park just off the M180
djames
hi, cosmic girl, i can't remember the name of the place you're talking about, but it does exist. it's included in the book "far from the sodding crowd". from what you say, it sounds like the book would be your kind of thing. Alastair
Try Wortley Top Forge just north of Sheffield, it's little known and hardly signposted so get directions before you go, billed as the oldest surviving Heavy Iron Forge in the World from the 1600's http://www.topforge.co.uk/

hennypenny
I love Glenhowe park at Wharncliffe side for walks. Wentworth Garden Centre has a lovely old sunken garden which is still very quiet, has a herd of deer and a bear pit, and is free to visit. The Quarry garden next to Whirlow park is sort of secretish. The Forbidden Corner might be the one you were told about:- http://www.theforbiddencorner.co.uk/ There is a lovely garden full of Azaleas and rhodadendrons in spring at Lea gardens near Matlock http://www.leagarden.co.uk/ Renishaw Hall gardens are worth a visit http://www.britainsfinest.co.uk/gardens/gardens.cfm/searchazref/81001140RENA Other places you might like to visit are Nostell Priory http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-vh/w-visits/w-findaplace/w-nostellpriory/ Cannon Hall at Cawthorne http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannon_Hall Eyam Hall http://www.eyamhall.com/ Haddon Hall http://www.haddonhall.co.uk/ Hardwick Hall http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-vh/w-visits/w-findaplace/w-hardwickhall/ Conisborough Castle http://www.conisbroughcastle.org.uk/Castle%20Info/castleinfo.htm Here is a listing of many gardens in Yorkshire:- http://www.castlesandgardens.co.uk/listing.html
