joyphil
A friend of ours owns a building on Bedford Road, the spur off Langsett Road opposite Tesco. Nowadays the adjoining site is being turned into flats, but it used to house a big steelworks. The story goes that our mate's place used to house elephants which worked in the steel works, before a funeral parlour was sited there. Does anyone know any more about the elephants of Langsett Road? jmdee
Can't help regarding elephants, Thomas Wards had one though. However, Tomlinsons had a funeral and taxi service operating around that area.
Halibut
I have a photograph (reproduction) of one of Thomas Wards elephants - it came from the City library.
retep
According to an elderly relative, she could remember circus animals being stabled at Tomlinsons, she lived close by on Gilpin Street.
joyphil
Ah, maybe that's it. Of course, there's also the legend of the Woodseats rampaging elephant isn't there? This was the reason why the Big Tree's tree isn't so big after all, if I recall what I once read. Just imagine, this pounding industrial metrololis with pachyderms roaming its sooty streets. Marvellous.
Tony
The funeral directors on Bedford St (now apartments) had upstairs stables for horses so it's quite possible that circus animals were stabled while in town.
hillsbro
T.W. Ward's certainly had elephants on their payroll - as much for publicity as anything, I imagine, but they were actually used for hauling loads of scrap etc. - see: http://www.picturesheffield.com/cgi-bin/picturesheffield.pl?_cgifunction=form&_layout=picturesheffield&keyval=sheff.refno=s00066
