pwhs
If you enter Graves Park via the entrance part way up Meadowhead and then keep going straight rather than turning right up towards the Pitch and Putt - there is a flattened out area surrounded by trees which ever since I was small was referred to as "The Open Air Theatre" - though I never knew why? Was it ever used as an open air theatre? If so, when? it must have been 1940s or even earlier?
algy
There's a book called Sheffield Parks and Gardens by D Hindmarch with a good picture of the open air theatre in 1944. It shows the cast of a production called 'Merrie England' which was performed in 1944 as part of the Holidays at Home Season. It had a cast of over 200 and involved a number of well-known names form the local music and drama scene.Producer was Laurie Lingard, musical director H E Taylor, and dances were arranged by Constance grant.
