Native Americans in Sheffield?

Firstly apologies to Dex and anyone that I offended by using the term"red Indian"..but....I was using it in the context it was originally given to me, PRE Native American Times...(1930)If I had used the more modern term, it would have lost any relevence to the information I was trying to find.

I have no evidence at all to even think that the person in question was even a real Native American. For all I know he could have been born and raised in Crookesmoor, and simply called himself a "Red Indian" (sic)

Finally If I had posted Information wanted on a native american who licked off cataracts, I doubt very much if our older users of this site would have known what I was after. Again, sorry to have offended anyone, but

I do remember my Grandmother having her cataracts removed in Leicester by a EAST indian who just spit on a piece of black slate &by picking up the grit on finger just rubbed them away this would between the 40s to 50s

I do seem to remember that sometime around the turn of the last century, Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show came to Sheffield.

One of the native-American indians died while here in Sheffield, and was buried in Wardsend cemetery. (I wonder if that is the OP's link to the native-American dying at the Five-Arches?)

Wrong cemetery PT, I recall my grandad telling me the story. The guy died from flu and was buried in the graveyard of the church that stood near where the Arena is. Unfortunately all the graves were cleared and the church demolished, his tribe would have paid to bring him back home, sad isn't it?

Shame on you.

Red Indian indeed!

This race were the original settlers of N America.

'Red Indian' was a name given by the ignorant colonists and should be consigned to the scrap book of history.

I would hope that we in the 21 st century realise that this derogatory term is no longer applicable.

Over here in Canada they are referred to as 'First Nations'

I suppose the term Red Indian might come from an attempt to distinguish between a native American and somebody from New Delhi. Certain sports teams called themselves something Indian, the Washington Redskins, the Cleveland Infians, the Atlanta Braves, none of which was meant to be offensive, quite the reverse. There is an effort afoot to get these teams to rename themselves, but if you expect Washington DC to comply, think again. Two Connecticut tribes, the Mashantucket Pequods, and the Mohegans have built the two biggest richest casinos in the world, complete with resorts, star quality shows, and golf courses, without help from the Mafia. Over here they are known as billionaires. They employ over 20,000 local non-tribal people. Not so down trodden after all.

And don't forget, they don't have to pay ANY taxes at all.

I have asked that this thread be re-pruned, to take down the very offensive comments by buck and poppins. This is a thread that has already been subjected to unnecessary bigoted remarks. Thank goodness, they were removed. Now I see the same old racially-laden slurs creeping back again. Whether First Nation Americans run casinos, stay away from the Mafia, or are downtrodden, just like white caucasian Anglo Saxons, depends on who they are. I know plenty of people of my own race, which just happens to be caucasian, who run gambling casinos, avoid paying taxes, and are far from "downtroddden." I also know plenty of Native Americans who pay taxes and are law abiding citizens. Just like the rest of us, there are some who have hit hard times and need societal support. And, by the way, what do Buck and Poppin's remarks have to do with memories about Sheffield? Moderator, please step in. Certainly in Canada,racially-directed, stereotypical remarks would not be tolerated for public display.

I feel that you're being a tad oversensitive here my friend.

I didn't interpret anything stated by Buck and Poppins as being racist or disparaging although the thread went off track a little.

Don't know if anyone else feels the way that you do though. :|

My intent was to show that the tribes are doing a great deal for themselves. I have many native American friends. A particular friend of mine from the days I lived on the Gaspe Peninsula was Chief Jerome of the MicMac tribe of New Richmond, Quebec. I am not and have never been racist. Perhaps our Canadian friend has a little bias against Americans, its not unknown. I'm an English Sheffield born Protestant American citizen married to an Irish born Catholic American citizen from County Clare. How's that for tolerance.

Did you know that French Canadians are known as Pepsis, peasoupers in Ontario and points west, or that English Canadians are known as tete carres ( square heads ) in Quebec. A very fine country where I lived many years but it has its prejudices just like any other.
