Sheffield landlords and landladies past

What wonderful memories and comments this thread has produced. People often ask what a ' community ' is or what being ' English ' is or ' British '. The terms are difficult to define but if they read the above comments they would see !

I don 't know if such characters will ever be allowed to return to the Sheffield scene [sadly, probably not ! ] but they certainly added to the colour of life ! I 'll just mention one pub landlady amongst many characters I came across in a life-time of ' popping in for one '---Vera, of the Nursery Tavern, Ecclesall Road.

My vote definitely goes for ROY (and MARGARET) MARSH at the Old Crown on London Road...Understand they've retired (abroad?) now, but they were a fantastic couple....great sense of humour, very welcoming, and kept their ales perfectly.

Margaret was heavily involved with the Licensed Victuallers and their charity functions, and regularly held whisky tastings....fantastic nights, raising hundreds/thousands for various charities.

they live near mojacar spain , Margaret is my friends sister ,her maiden name was margaret Cosgrove.

Crooksey & CHAIRBOY, didn't Bill Hoffman have the Pheasant at Oughtibridge at one time, maybe in the early 1970s? I seem to recall seeing his genial face behind the bar there. He was indeed a real gent.

I only remember Bill at the Stone House and Sportsman (Lodge Moor) but that isn't to say he wasn't at the Pheasant. This isn't my specialist subject, believe me!

Yes, thats right, me and my oh used to work behind the bar for him. It would be early 70s but I cant be any more precise.

He then went to the Sportsman at Lodge Moor.

He was a true gentleman.

Carlie167 - thanks for confirming that my memory isn't failing me (it happens when you reach your bus pass years, as I have discovered!) Yes - Bill Hoffman was a true gentleman of the "old school"; the sort of landlord that was hard to find then, and even harder now.
