But manhole covers are always the same shape as the manhole, and they are not always round. In fact most manhole covers you see nowadays are square or rectangular. If you asked me that in an interview, I'd give you the "stock answer" and then tell you that you're wrong. Manhole covers don't "fall down" the hole of their own accord - you'd have to exhibit criminal recklessness to cause that to happen, and the idea that round ones are round because they offer some element of safety and protection is incorrect. There are lots of good reasons for round manholes, but they're not good enough to outweigh the advantages of square and rectangular ones in many cases.
