Elmambo
That is exactly what I have just said in answer to " sheilawragg1" if you read the post correctly. No it isn't if you read the post
jaffa1
I was explaining to " sheilawragg1 " that there had never been a Roxy on Infirmary road, we all know where the Roxy was [ well most of us ] My suggestion to sheilawragg1 was it might be the Roscoe she / he was thinking of but it is not a supermarket and was demolished a long time ago. Does that explain things better for you.
stpetre
The Roxy was at Page Hall, I think you mean the Roscoe Yes, the Roxy was on Idsworth Road, Page Hall, the same road as the Firth Park W.M.C. I believe both buildings are still there.
Nigel Womersle
I used to go to the pictures on barnsley road just down the hill from lane top. Saturday afternoon matinee, Zorro! Can't remember what it was called at the time, but it later became the capital. Does anybody remember? When the cinema first opened in 1939, it was called 'The Capitol'. Later the name was changed to Essoldo. It closed as a cinema in 1975 - known as 'The Vogue'. I think there was another name between 'Essoldo' and 'Vogue', but I can't remember what it was.Today it is a carpet showroom. leftin60
The Paragon at Firth Park never seemed to complete a programme without breaking down for short while, did you ever find that Janner.

Wasn't the Essoldo at Lane Top owned by the same people from the one at Herries Road (Southey) ?

Cheers for that info Nigel, that's jogged my memory,I remember now. Think it was probably because a lot of people still called it the capital at the time. I also remember capital caravans next door to it with the 75&76 bus terminus next to that and hillards
Nigel Womersle
Wasn't the Essoldo at Lane Top owned by the same people from the one at Herries Road (Southey) ? Yes it was. The original name was 'The Forum'. There was also a small cinema in Ecclesfield called 'The Cinema House'. Essoldo bought all three cinemas, changing their names to their own. This was around 1949. All three were sold by Gleesons as a package. The Capitol and Forum were both built from the same plans, but The Forum had around twenty more seats that The Capitol. At one time, Essoldo was the third largest cinema group in the UK, behind Rank and ABC.
