SaveMyCity
Anybody remember me and my GF getting chucked out of the Gaumont in 1973 for trying to get in to see an "x" film ("The Final Programme")? I was 16 and I was so excited about taking my first girlfriend to the pictures that I (unbelievably, I know) hadn't noticed the certification. I would never have dared try, otherwise. Anyhow, we were waiting in the queue for about 10 mins and when I got to the box office I pushed my cash over and said "two stalls, please" and the woman said "no" and pushed it back. I said "why not" and she said "because this showing is an x and you're not eighteen". Without thinking, I said "No, it's not". She said, matter-of-factly "Yes it is" and then a hairy-<removed> chap appeared (manager?) and just said "Go on, get out," and we left, walking past the whole queue. "Walk of Shame" doesn't even come close. I nearly died. As I recall, we went to the Cineplex and watched "That'll Be The Day", instead. Anyway, nothing will ever embarrass me again. I could bare my bum on City Hall steps and it wouldn't bother me, I tell thee! Edited November 3, 2016 by nikki-red spelling errors
Elmambo
Could be wrong here, but I believe at that time the age restriction was 16, years for an X certificate film.

trastrick
umm, i think your right..was there 3ratings..U . A. and X. Remember this? For a time in the 50s at least, there was also an "H". https://www.google.ca/imgres?imgurl=https%3A%2F%2Fupload.wikimedia.org%2Fwikipedia%2Fen%2F3%2F34%2FBBFCCert.png&imgrefurl=https%3A%2F%2Fen.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FBritish_Board_of_Film_Classification&docid=uwYwfxby98NrSM&tbnid=pCesEpy3iJIdEM%3A&w=327&h=248&hl=en&bih=631&biw=1192&ved=0ahUKEwj5wr63xIzQAhXDQSYKHe7tBIgQMwgdKAAwAA&iact=mrc&uact=8 Edited November 3, 2016 by trastrick

I remember the 'H' films but had always thought that it was an unofficial classification designed to promote horror movies until l saw your link. SaveMyCity
Could be wrong here, but I believe at that time the age restriction was 16, years for an X certificate film. Not in 73. The restriction for x certificates was 18. The entry age for X was raised from 16 to 18 in 1970. X was restricted only to under 16s under the previous certification system. Flippin' unlucky, wasn't I?
