mikeG
George Orwell - Animal Farm Had to read that for my English Lit GCE 'O' level in 1958. As its a very short book the exam was quite easy to pass. Its a good read though.

I haven't finished it yet so can't be certain, but up to now it reads like capitalist propaganda.

If I remember correctly the principles of capitalism and communism are well illustrated so that, as a 15 year old, I was able to understand all about it for the first time. I remember a pig called Napoleon and a horse called Hercules(the latter could have been in Steptoe and Son).

I'll have to see how it ends before I can fully 'get' the moral of the story. I just have a sinking feeling I'm going to have to go against popular opinion on this one... Ousetunes
The Sign by Thomas de Wesselow. It's about the Turin Shroud and The Resurrection. So far absolutely fascinating.
taxman
I haven't finished it yet so can't be certain, but up to now it reads like capitalist propaganda. George Orwell would turn in his grave if he read that He was a confirmed Democratic Socialist and anti-totalitarian, hence his hatred for the excesses of Stalinism, which many others on the left sought to ignore or play down. metalman
Just finished 'The Red House Mystery' by A.A. Milne (yes, that one; it was his only detective story) and it was quite jolly even if you could see where it was going not long after the start. Now I'm on to 'The Rasp' by Philip Macdonald, which is from the same mid-1920's period.
