This is an open invitation for men and women of all ages and experience to attend training sessions with Sheffield Steal in Hillsborough Park, every Saturday morning from 9.30am.

The Club will be entering two Open and Womens teams to a number of tournaments this year so there is plenty of opportunity for beginners to get some competitive experience. Contact Mark Fulford (open) or Catherine Moore (women) for further details on sheffieldsteal@hotmail.co.uk.

Feel free to read on for more information about the club and the sport.

Sheffield Steal was founded in 2003 and is one of the top Ultimate clubs in the region. The club competed at the World Club Championships in 2006 and a number of its members have represented Great Britain in international competition. The club hopes to build on its previous successes by re-establishing itself as a top twelve UK side in 2008, and qualifying for the European Club Championships in 2009.

Ultimate Frisbee, or Ultimate as it is officially known, has been a sport in the UK for thirty years or more and the country has the most successful National teams in Europe, winning four Gold and three Silver medals at the recent European Championships.

Combining the rules of netball, basketball and American football, Ultimate is a fast-paced team sport played with a flying disc. The players must pass to their teammates aiming to catch the disc in their opponents ‘endzone’ to score a point. The players are unable to run with the disc and can only hold onto it for ten seconds. The sport is non-contact and completely self-refereed. The ‘Spirit of the Game’ is the underlying philosophy of the sport which enables players to make their own foul calls and resolve issues on the pitch without the input of a third party. Giving players this added responsibility helps to remove any under-hand tactics and playacting which may become a feature of other sports.

The club has a number of plans for 2008 to increase particicpation and awareness of the sport in the local area. Sessions are to be made available to local teaching staff so that they are able to take Ultimate into their schools and a summer recreational league is planned to give inexperienced players an opportunity for friendly competition within the city.

Look out for more information on the recreational summer league and the upcoming National Indoor Finals and check out www<dot>ukultimate<dot>com for all the info on Ultimate in the UK.

Sorry to be pedantic, but shouldn't it be Sheffield Steel ?

"Sheffield steal" sounds more like you are going to town to rob the shops.

:hihi: It's a play on words, as a 'steal' is ultimate frisbee terminology - it's kind of a poach or interception...
