Pyebank - Shirley Marshall 1940's

Recommended Posts

Hi Roundhouse,

I remember Margaret Stocks, used to live near a mate of mine on Lopham St. I think next door to Ethel Lunn. She got married and went to live on Rock Street until the slum clearance. The name Dorothy Shirley rings a bell but thats all. June Woodhouse I remember, she and her husband had a pub at Wadsley Bridge if my memory serves me right. I must be about 1 or 2 years younger than your Mom so I can't recall her, as 2 years is a hell of a gap in age when in your early teens!

Alan

Thanks Alan, Mom remembers all the people you mention, but she is still no closer to finding Margaret Stocks, Dorothy Shirely or June Woodhouse.

Hi,

My dad Michael darling and my Uncle Keith Darling were members of the 61st boys brigade. They were wanting to find anyone who was there with them in the early 50's. The names my dad mentioned are Keith and Graham Cheetham (sorry if the spelling's wrong) and Keith Pullfry (sorry again!). They used to do a march at Whitsuntide through Firth Park,

Regards,

Lisa.

Keith Cheetham is my dad and Graham Cheetham is my uncle.

I have pm'd you.

Hi there

Thought I would revive this old post as I used to live on Denholme Close on the maisonettes just off Rock Street.

Lisa ... I think I remember you? My parents used to collect the football coupons? I also vaguely remember me when I was little being given a small pink and white checked stool, possibly by your dad (dont know if he made it as it was handmade). If I am right you should be around the same age as me or possibly a little younger, I am in my early 40's.

Other surnames I remember are Ricketts, Smedley, Blake, Cranston, Marshall, Ogden, Allcots, Barkers, Boot, Ronksley

As for the stool, Ill ask him later, dad never forgets a thing! :hihi: Does my dad know your family? I dont recognise any of the surnames youve posted, maybe dad will. Im in my late 30's so Im a little younger than you.

My mother, Shirley Marshall (not a computer-user alas) is trying to trace some old school pals from Pye Bank and Burngreave schools. So.. does anyone remember or have contact with Margaret Stocks, June Woodhouse, or Dorothy Shirley. My mother lived at 2 Nottingham St, opposite the Merry Heart pub (1930's early 1940's). She went from Pyebank to Burngreave and then worked at Walsh's Department Store. She remembers the chippy run by the Goodwin sisters. Mr Speight was the headmaster at Pyebank when she was there. Mom got hit with a board rubber by Miss Cross (for leaving the cloakroom door open). She was in Miss Lavericks class at Burngreave and the head was Miss Yates. Dorothy Shirley also lived on Nottingham St and Margaret Stocks lived on Lopham Street. Mom was born 1934. Any info gratefully received and will be passed on. Mom lives in Southport at the moment, but never forgets her Sheffield roots.

Does your mother remember any of the Suttons from Bramber Street.

Looking at your list other names, Carol Boot is married to an old friend of mine, and should the Allcots be Aucott,Tracey, Mark, my ex bro in law and a younger sister who's name escapes me.

Hi Roundhouse, Was your mother at Pye Bank at the same time as Miss Fisher, the teacher who came from Penistone? In 1946 she took a group of Pb pupils for a day's outing to her family's farm at Penistone.

There are some other Pye Bank threads on this site, and you might be interested in knowing that there are also some references to Pye Bank on http://www.sheffieldhistory.co.uk/ --indeed, somewhere on history there is a picture of the PB teachers of 1943.

Hi, Kingfisher,

Yes, you are quite right, my grandfather was named Jack Marshall and was a melter at Firth Browns and his wife was called Betty (lovely lady) - their daughter Shirley is my mother. If you send me a Private message I will give mum a buzz and see if she remembers you. Thanks also to Redfyre. Mother is away at the moment, but when she gets back I will ask her if she remembers the Penistone trip. I think I will have to get mum a computer for Christmas and she can answer directly!
