Wow! some great suggestions there. It is opening my eyes to places i've been missing out on!!

Cubana - that's salsa dancing mayhem right?

Trippets - didn't it used to be a jazz club? What's it like now?

Old House - wasn't that the Halcyon? I used to avoid it as it seemed a bit aloof and was bordering on what my friends might call "poncy" - and was about £8 a pint too. Has it changed?

Sanctuary - never even heard of it but picture on website is nice so that's worth a look

West st Live - Is it always live rock music on a friday night? maybe one for when my "Rocker" friend Lenny visits on Fri 22nd Feb!

Bath/Dev Cat - yes I know them

Red Deer - will poke our noses in

Faigs - ?

Hot Pants - also a strong contender I think

Decisions, decisions!

I'm nervous. I have a group of friends coming up on Saturday and I don't really have any local knowledge of where to take them in town. We're all over 30 so we want to avoid anywhere too lairy, poncy or scummy. So what are we left with - any suggestions?

reflex or flares. one is a 70s place and one is an 80s place. not sure which on was which though. seem to think reflex is the 70s. cannot promise you that the people won't be poncy, and they are more like loud bars. only been into them a few times but it was good fun.

:o He said NOT lairy, poncy or scummy. They weren't requirements!

What sort of music do you like Ron? What sort of ambience do you like? How do you like to dress when you go out?

One man's palace is another man's and all that...

Hot pants is always a laugh and we might be there on Saturday for a birthday do. :)

There's a good gig on at Plug if they like music Glasvegas, Union City and the Headliners but i wouldn't advise staying in afters.

What sort of music do you like Ron?

Hi Edna. Well it's a bit of a mixed group coming up from Nottingham, but they're a bit anti-townie - though I don't mind that myself (i remember one good night at Kingdom, think it was summer 2004, but admittedly I've also erased a clutch of horrific Kingdom experiences from my memory). I quite like the Casbah myself but suspect I'm in the minority in that respect. I've been to the city hall do years ago so have provisonally booked us on the guest list there for later. Based on advice given here I'm planning to try a few boozers around cubana area beforehand, but will look into the plug too - bands/live music would be good actually. thanks

Evening,

Notice how you say mate that you'd be trying the boozers aroung Cubana. If so then make sure you take your friends for a few in The Dog and Partridge, I normally go there with mates on a night out before we hit the other bars around Division Street. I'd imagine your mates would like it in there not so sure about the Sanctuary though. We had our work Christmas meal in town and about 6 of us went looking for a drink after. The average age of our group was probably in the late 40's including my youngish self, they took one step inside The Sanctuary hated the music and went straight back out. They said they fancied a few drinks and to be able to talk and felt like they'd walk into a club, though as you say nightclub for over 30's, it could be what your looking for.
