discodown
Are you for real? The next big thing????? It may have escaped your attention but deep house and techno has been around some 15-20 years (give or take). I'm aware of this. As you well know. Techno is at least 20 years old and has been bubbling underground for many years. Deep house is even older, in fact it as old as disco and all the better for it. I simply mean that its likely that these two genres are to be the next scene that goes overground and gets overexposed and finds its way onto ministry compilations and so on. Its actually already happening to a small extent with deep house. I'm not nailing my colours to any mast except house music. IMO declaring yourself to be one thing or another is a bit silly, because then when you move on and evolve or you want to try something a bit different you end up looking as though you are trying to be cool and latch onto the next big thing. This is why i've said that any night bringing new DJ talent to the city is to be welcomed. I'm not bothered with what they do(unless its commercial cheese) i'm going to give my support(not that my support counts for anything! I seriously doubt that anybody actually listens to my worthless rambles) to the nights that I feel are doing worthwhile things regardless of genre. Hence why UG, Off The Rails, Act Like Ya Know, Phuture Boogie, Vibe, Obsession and a few others including BIO will have my support this year. As for me saying its the next big thing, I think this year is it will be exposed and exploited and if that makes you nauseous thats your issue not mine. I'm certainly not bandwagon jumping and saying this is what i'm going to be playing this year. ts unfortunate that the music we love gets dragged kicking and screaming into the light, raped, pillaged, abused and exploited then disregarded like it never mattered but its hardly my fault neither is it STF's fault. they are simply putting on a night they want to put on and I welcome them. Lets hope they do good things. I'm sure they will.

Chris BIO
Oooh, get her! I know what you're saying about trends and it's foooking toss if you ask me (the whole notion, that is), but I just can't see 'deep house' being one of them. I just can't imagine The Mountain People, Moodymann etc etc getting popular in the 'overground' sense. It's always been dissed as 'Dad House' as long as I've known and I'm quite happy for it to stay that way! Seriously though, I don't think it's got enough of an identity to go mainstream, there's no 'dress code' or particular image to accompany it, nor is there any particular 'scene' to focus on (the way Berlin got invaded far to late by trend-seeking journos trying to discover what all this minimal fuss is about and they've only just gone wild for the 'fidget' thing coming out of West London with Sinden et al) - not enough for the music press to latch onto and say "you should go here", "you should wear this", "you should buy this tune" etc. I mean, what would you say? "If you want to experience deep house go for nights out in Lincoln, Dallas, Gent, Melbourne, JoBurg, Toronto, Nottingham..."

LiamC1979
p.s. I spent a few months in Dallas and sadly the main bulk of dance at that time was Trance/Prog (unfortunately). That was about 4 years back, tho. However, Demarkus Lewis does live in Dallas so maybe things have changed.

rocketride
Its a shame that a post about a new club night has devolved into an argument about the next big thing in house music. I doubt that techno will ever be commercial, its pretty much the foundations of the underground. I cant see Hallam FM ever playing something like Duoteque's Logo nor can i see how they could comercialise the sound it self. It already is more popular that it has been for some years but imo thats a good thing cos there is nothing worse than hearing the music you love in a half empty club with just a bunch of die hard train spotters. there is still some good electro out there as well, its just a shame that tunes like YeahYeah and Exceeder were released with utterly pointless Vocals sloppily mashed on top of them. I think that they were the tuning point for many people, just as Castles in the Sky was for trance fans. anyways rant over...
MarkD77
Well, to get things back on topic I think I can safely say there'll be only quality house music from this night. So if that's what does it for you, get yourself down and say hello to Seb.
