The old Ecclesall library scandal

It aggravates me enormously that bequeathed land becomes controlled and then absorbed into ownership by SCC. It was one of the first things which occurred to me when I heard about the St Lukes debacle.

I would normally be in favour of supporting St Lukes but this land issue doesn't sit with me.

One person I mentioned it to said that JG Graves probably wouldn't mind, which I think is rather blinkered because of their own high riding feelings regarding St Lukes.

SCC should be forced to make full declarations of all land which do not belong to them as a company and the public should be notified of all such land in order to protect it from the capitalist pigs who deem themselves suited to selling it on as they see fit!

Zebra the only defect in your argument is that SCC is a public sector body as distinct from the capitalists you speak - however I entirely agree that the metaphor you've chosen fits SCC.

Is Ecclesall protected from closure under the current round of proposed library cuts?

There are no proposed library cuts. All services are up for review as the government has cut £57 million from this year's budget, plus an additional £30 million from next year's and requires the Council to set a legal budget. Library services are part of the review and no proposals have been made over which, if any libraries will have their hours reduced or if any at all will close.

I suggest they should close them all. I for one would see the elderly continuing to receive the necessary care they need as more important than folk getting access to a free book service in this day and age.

Oh, changed your mind have you? This was your reply when I suggested the Council might have to choose between keeping residential homes open & providing free parking :

Quit the sentimental babble. You could roll out that argument for any price increase / cost introduction. It's not that simple.

I would imagine libraries,by facilitating reading and social contact, help to develop a sensitivity for others, and may indirectly support the ultimate retention of care for the elderly. It is a very clever tactic to present the two policies as alternatives when the real issue is the squeeze on resources, and the ill-fated austerity programme.

Library provision is an extension of the education system, and social skills and PHSE are a vital part of the curriculum. The old need both the sympathy and the resources of the young-it wont be forthcoming if we become a nation of Phillistines!

Shall I rephrase then?

Since the Ecclesall Library was reinstated as the council had closed the old one and sold the land illegally, is Ecclesall Library protected from closure?

No libraries are protected from closure. Neither are any of the public services supplied by the Council. A library service isn't a building - it's staff and materials. If the Council has to reduce the number of staff employed, then services may go, but the buildings will remain. A number of local library services have been withdrawn since the 1990s, including Hemsworth, Lane Top, Grenoside and Oughtibridge. The buildings are still there, but they are put to different use.

People's perception of public services as buildings is one of the sad facts that Local Authorities have to deal with. When libraries close, there is always a hell of a stink kicked up by local residents, many of whom rarely if ever use the service, but don't want to see the building closed. I rather think that this thread is focussing on just that.
