Glad you are enjoying the thread, mickone1973. It has certainly stood the test of time. It's almost a couple of years since I posted this photo and a couple more, and shortly after that, 60009 visited Sheffield.

I've just booked for Mrs hillsbro and me to go to Liverpool and back behind 70000 Britannia on 2 April. Watch this space!.:)

Spoke too soon. The trip to Liverpool behind Britannia has been cancelled. Instead they are offering us a trip to Chester on the same day, behind 34067 Tangmere. But at least it will go through Sheffield, probably around 10 a.m. The times should be available here a bit nearer the date (still 2 April).

Hi andyrad29 - I'll see what I can do. We decided not to go on the trip (we made a similar journey to Chester three years ago, with 60009 Union of South Africa - here's a photo of the train pulling into Scunthorpe, another in Manchester and one at Chester) but I'll keep my ear to the ground.

But I reckon my Midland Railway great-grandfather will be turning in his grave. To think - a Bulleid "spam can" on the hallowed metals of his Hope Valley line.....;)

Absolutely andyrad29, especially when moving - all that syncronised engineering moving like a Swiss watch. I was reminded of the 9F 2-10-0 that was highlighted quite a few moons ago for running at 90mph on a passenger train. With 5' diameter driving wheels, it was stated, I think, that these wheels were revolving at some 9 times a second. Given that the circumference of the driving wheels would be 15.71 feet (2 pi r) and that an object travelling at 90mph will cover 132 feet per second, then the wheel will revolve 8.4 in one second (132 divided by 15.71). (Are you impressed Hillsboro? I've forgotten what your specialist subject was but please put me right if my calc is wrong).

Incidentally, Wikipedia records that once when a 9F was deputising for a Pacific on an East Coast train, an enthusiast timing the run noted that twice the loco had exceeded 90mph on the run. The driver was later told that 'he was only supposed to keep time, not break the bloody sound barrier'.
