I was the drummer at Sothall from 1981 'till the night of its closure in 1983, working with Lenny Willey initially, then the great Cecil Ladds on organ. We had no idea of the club's closure until we arrived for the Friday night 'old tyme dancing' only to find the place boarded-up and my drums still inside. We managed to get into the building and rescue my kit (and Cecil's not inconsiderable collection of sheet music and his special shoes (soft leather for playing bass pedals)! I subsequently took up the first of many summer seasons with Cecil's son's band - Ken Ladd's 'Nitetrain' on the Isle of Wight and also some winter residencies at The Consort Suite, Thurcroft with organist Jon Smith.
