Nagel
I hitch-hiked a lot in my youth, even in my childhood starting at age 8, much to the consternation of my parents. It's very easy to get a lift at that age as everyone wants to save you from the terrible fate awaiting you if the next car picks you up. Why has hitch-hiking all but disappeared? Is it just that people don't trust each other any more?
Mr Prime
It's a bit tricky when you're on a bike. Maybe I should invest in a tandem, on the off chance that I pass a large-breasted blonde at the roadside in desperate need of a ride? Don't call us, really don't. megalithic
I had 11 hitch-hikers in my escort van, 9 people and 2 dogs, they needed to get to Glastonbury and i was their last hope. I've also hitched a lift many times, usually when i'm camping and need to get back from B to A, my parking spot.

Is it just that people don't trust each other any more? very good point. Once I picked up two 12 year old girls, hitching just here, in Derbyshire, like Baslow to Bakewell. It was a camper van as well. I just got them home to their village and said they should be careful. you don't see the queues of hitchers on the slip roads anymore you used to. Is it just that people don't trust each other any more? I'd love to know the answer to that. Perhaps it's a few different things. Men did seem to get more jittery about picking me up as a lone female in the later years that I hitched- it seemed to be a mix of them fearing more than previously for my safety and fearing that I'd accuse them of something, based upon reading between the lines of general conversation. Lorry drivers stopped picking me up when motorway hitching became illegal and more companies threatened to fire them for it. More recently when I've hitched it has been Eastern European and Indian immigrants that have been kind enough to offer me a lift. I imagine it's still a common thing in their native countries. Soldiers also often seem willing to stop. I always enjoyed hitching because you'd meet such a variety of charcters with interesting stories to tell- much better than sitting bored on your own on a train or coach. spineless
I used to hitch hike regularly years ago and I never had any issues. When I got my driving licence I used to pick hitchers all the time. That came to an end when one of them tried to nick my tapes while I was filling up the tank. Got him to admit to it, return the tapes and bang in the middle of nowhere I stopped the car and told him to get out. Haven't given anybody a ride ever since.
