I keep hearing that argument but it has one tiny flaw. It's a steaming pile of horse poo. I live in the the world's most populous Muslim country and no one has heard of enforced marriage. No one knows what honour killings are and no one chops bits of anyone. Java is very 'Muslim' and I can assure posters that none of that crap happens here. In other words, these things are local to some cultures but sod all to do with Islam. Given there are a lot of other Muslims in the UK from other countries like Turkey that don't have forced or even arranged marriages, it suggests it's a cultural thing rather than one normal in Islam. The Jews used to sell their daughters into slavery, too. "When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she will not be freed at the end of six years as the men are. I don't know whether the males weren't interested or whether it was a comment on the females, but the fathers didn't usually get paid much for their daughters - in fact, they had to pay to have them taken away. Like many investment policies, such wedding arrangements may have 'front-end loading' or 'back-end loading'. With 'front-end loading' you have to pay the fee at the beginning. With back-end loading you have to pay the fee to end the deal. Examples: When you see an aged wrinkly (but wealthy) man with a trophy bride, (often front-end loaded) you don't really think she's head over heels in love with him do you? Have you ever heard of divorce settlements? - Sometimes the back-end loading fee can be huge. Even if the back end isn't. Check out the mail order bride industry, mostly white western males are buying themselves young nubile women. It's a shame that polygamy is outlawed in this country as it means that they can't get a BOGOF. I do wish that people would stop trying to turn this vile practice (forced marriages) into a cultural and/or religious issue, it's irrelevant. Now she wants me to buy a car and yet another house. You'd think two houses in the tropics was enough for anyone. She wants to go to ruddy Bali for Christmas on top of that. The latter is cheap. Some Muslims do it as do some Christians and some others like 10% of the Japanese. In this country it is clearly in the Indian and Pakistani communities. All the multicultural chickins are coming home to roost. Forced marriages, female genital mutilation, language barriers, etc etc would never have been issues in this country if not for large scale inward migration from the parts of the world where this is common practice.
