Late 70's early 80's, missing boy found in sheffield canal

Can anyone remember the story of a missing boy that was found in the Tinsley canal, either in the late 70's or early 80's. he would have been between 8 and 11 years old and he went to Norfolk school,

I can remember the police coming round to my house to ask about him, i am trying to find out his name , if anyone can help.

I think it was Tony Something.

I remember this as I was one of the many who went out searching for him, but can`t now recall his name. I think it was a tragic accident rather than a crime.

I believe it was 1980 my husband also went out searching for him

The boy's name was Tony Smith aged eight I found him on May 20th but my memory

will not bring back the year at present his fathers name was Garfield and they were from the Manor. He had run away from home.

i went to school with tony smith and remember being visited by two policemen. tony lived on city road just opposite the shops at the corner of cradock road.

I lived on Wulfric Road around the corner from the young boy-we were similiar ages, so sad. I believe he was found in the viaduct at Tinsley having been using a rope as a swing. So many people were searching for him. A tragic end to a young life.

Didn't a young boy also drown in the canal basin around that time - maybe a little later mid - late 80's.

I seem to remember that been in the Sheffield Star and people been really shocked.
