cosywolf
Despite the fact that it has been made clear by studies and trials that badger culling does not work to reduce Bovine TB, and can in fact make the problem worse (badgers move quickly in to abandoned territory, so killing badgers=more badger movement=faster spread of disease) it seems the Government feel they have to do something, no matter how futile, ineffective and costly it may be. In fact, money spent on comprehensive testing, better animal husbandry, and better monitored movement of cattle around the country could be far more effective...however this would presumably cost more than eradicating native wildlife, so has been discounted as a way forward in favour of trapping/gassing/shooting wild animals. They are just waiting to see how it goes down in Wales before starting in Britain... I have had a couple of emails through recently with links to petitions against culling. I thought it was worth sharing them here so that anyone who feels strongly about this could have their voices heard. I would also urge people who care to write to their MPs, and to contact organisations such as the Wildlife Trusts and the RSPCA, who are both against the cull, and encourage more pro-active lobbying and request any further information on ways to get involved. BasilRathbon
Does anyone remember Len Badger, the portly midfielder who played for Sheffield United back in the seventies? I'd hate to see him culled.

Zamo
Allegedly, the BNP would like a cull of TB carriers too.
RosyRat
Have signed both petitions. Have also raised the issue with Labour Animal Welfare Society, of which I'm a member & written to my MP, who is very keen on protecting wildlife. I can't believe that a cull is proposed when it's been proved time and again that the evidence isn't there to show that a reduction in badgers equals a reduction in bovine TB. I'll be actively campaigning against this ludicrous and horrific move & am so glad you've brought this to the Forum Cosywolf.
muddycoffee
I think it would be fine to kill them as long as they don't go to waste. Being such big ugly buggers there must be plenty of meat on them.
puddinburner
Well as far as I'm concerned...badgers only carry TB and make no real difference to how or why cows get it. Bovine means cow? so how the hell does that connect with poor old Brock? Government agents spreading it to wipe farmers out, that's my opinion.
