maurice1
Reading all these replies. I am beginning to wonder if there is anything left. I lived in Sheffield from 1967 to 1971 and the things remembered were the hub of city life. What is life like today?. Maurice

Cliffhanger
A few for starters ...... Wednesday’s Kop - getting yer lugs frozen off in winter. Roses games at Bramhall Lane – with pop and sarnies watching Boycott bat for 3 days – character building stuff…… Real pubs – Museum, Albert and the Black Swan for music, just about any Wards pub, and the smell of the breweries wafting across town on a cold winter’s day. Going to me Dad’s works in Darnall on a tram and having a ride on the wooden escalator in Banners. Proper blue and cream buses with conductors, when you could jump on and off at the back, and wondering if they’d make it up Greystones with a full load. Penthouse Club with condensed sweat dripping off the ceiling, and all night buses home. Going to Manchester by electric train. Real snow that lasted forever and sledging in Bingham Park – faster than Alton Towers! Father Christmas in a stage coach?! at S&E Co-op and the Fairly Grotto at the bottom of the Moor on an old bomb site. The Star when it was a proper paper. Sanella’s Ice-cream – best ever 99’s – massive. Woman with the human weigh-scales in Encliffe Park. Riding right round the circular bus routes - a holiday treat (honest)! Plus all the old shops – Redgates, Suggs, Walsh’s for the annual embarrassment of a school uniform fit-out, Wilson And Pecks queuing for concert tickets or buying the latest LP/45. Eating chocolate mishapes and Iced Gems after swimming at Glossop Rd baths. Pond St Nellie telling everyone to get their jumpers on in the middle of a heat wave. The roast chestnut monger up Cambridge St in winter. The old cinemas – Gaumont, Classic and Greystones Flea Pit (since a casino?) – we’d bang on the seats and watch the dust cloud rise through the projector beam. Fish and chips from 2 Steps or Dales in Sharrow – never could decide which were the best. Apolgies if any of these are still around, I've been away a while ....... Guest
Having left in the early 1990's, and not getting back nearly as often as I should, I miss lots of things about Sheffield, most of which are probably still there today. As for the things I know have disappeared, I miss: - Being able to get on the 95 bus at the Commercial Street stop, going round Park Square and up Duke Street to get to City Road and beyond. Much quicker than the route it took the last time I was on it. - The cafe in Schofields that had lots of clocks on the wall. My Gran used to take me there when I was a little kid. - Sheaf Valley Baths. The changing rooms had those strange little wire basket hanger thingies to put your clothes in. - The lido at Millhouses. Our primary school had a trip there every summer. Remember swimming with my armbands on, dodging the floating dead flies and leaves. - On the subject of Millhouses, I seem to recall a really tall slide in the playground there. It had a little wooden box thing at the top where you could stand trembling waiting for your go. Maybe it just seemed tall to me at the time. - The cinema at Crystal Peaks (UCI?). - A very early memory: bands playing on the band stand in Western Park during the Summer. - Sledging down the hills in a snow-covered Norfolk Park. Oh, and the excellent bonfires they used to have there every bonfire night. - Shopping at Chelsea Girl on Fargate...Now that really dates me!
