Why are pork pies known locally as growlers?

Recommended Posts

Aren’t words wonderful?

I was born and dragged up in Sheffield and have never heard of a growler being a pork pie or even a rough looking woman. A growler for me is something smaller than a bergy bit and for that I better point you to an explanation lol

Its not a Sheffield term, its a Tyke term originating in Leeds I believe.

As a side issue, growlers as in burgs, how do you think that name came about?

How did Growlers get their name? that is a hard one.

Icebergs and their sizes have been determined by the “International Ice Patrol”, you could not make that up lol

I suspect that the names were given to them by local fishermen and I known that they are now one of the internationally known names for Icebergs see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iceberg#Size

I can certainly confirm that your G & T will fizz nicely with the addition of a bit of ice from a growler lol

Its a whalers term for any of the smaller pieces of ice ie growlers and bergy bits (who ever came up with that one) as in watch out, a warning, dog growling, something worse coming.
