Sylvesters Bar, Leopold Square, Now open.

I'm sorry but you either have faith in your 'vision' or you don't? What you are basically saying is it will be a cool cross section hang out jazz and blues bar all week Sun to Wed, (when town is dead). Then come Friday and Saturday anyone that has supported you all week will have to make way for the commercial rubbish that can be found anywhere else on West st just so you can fill it and knock out bottles of beer for £3 to groups of guys that may come in off West St and otherwise not like it.

Can it not be laid back at the weekends and pay the bills? Or are you saying that those people during the week wont be going out on weekends? You say you created Sylvesters as you and your husband I think wanted to create somewhere for more discerning customers that dont generally enjoy certain other Sheffield venues.

Slight retraction of certain points!

So, we visited again last Friday night. No Dj and there was live music. Crowd was very good, I noted a lot of ex Crystal VIP's. Service was decent found a table and enjoyed the guy who was singing. It seems thay haven't yet bowed to the pressure of commercialisation to appease the West St hoards and I for one will be returning if it maintains an atmosphere as this on the weekend.

There were two american guys singing on the city hall steps today, I don't know who they were or why they were there, but later this afternoon while I was eating outside Sylvesters. Vernon was talking to the same americans about singing for him on Friday night.

So you heard it here folks

Carborundum, your cynicism is so tiresome & unfortunately all too often typical of our city. Sylvesters is locally owned & by all accounts will offer a different approach, not the usual west street bar formula.... at least go along before making your judgement

I wouldn't take much notice of someone who thinks Dempseys is the pinnacle of classy nightlife.

....

And as for 'magnificent' bottled Peroni? Have you had it and its been bad? I can let you in to a secret though.......keep it in a fridge before drinking, open and serve quickly! Anywhere can serve good bottled beer lol.

Uh-uh, I disagree. Some beers are meant to be served at a specific temperature, and even the manufacturers are going their way out to dsign a glass to retain the bubbles, so that it is as refreshing as it could be. It is not being about snobby, but it's the job of the establishment to take note of such things anyway.

Just my two pence.

Requoting the Star article:

He secured the unit next to Platillos after convincing Manchester-based developers Ask that he would add a contrasting – and independent – ingredient to the mix in the former education headquarters, off Leopold Street. ...

Sylvester's has a council licence that allows it to open until midnight Sunday to Wednesday and 2am on other nights and the idea is to offer a range of musical styles as background music to a cosy night out. The capacity is 118, excluding the terrace overlooking the square.

Vernon, who has brought in Sam Cooper, from Barnsley, to manage the venue, is hoping to attract a relatively mature group of customers. "People want to feel comfortable, to have somewhere to have a

drink and relax.

"I'm a musician. I want it to be almost like Henry's or Mr Kite's used to be. There's Cubana but that has a Latin feel. I'm going more for blues and jazz – more of a cross section.

I think the owner did the smart thing to ask for that particular slot from Ask. I was also disappointed when I saw the sticker on the window that it was going to be another Ask restaurant. I guess I am biased because of one bad meal I've had in the other existing Ask restaurant. So I kind of dismissed that particular area.

I also noticed that those buildings are quite small. Even the Wagamama is small too. 118 seems small, but I suppose it's the average size of a pub. I will check it out soon though with my usual pub/bar crawl group. :hihi:

My usual drinking group do like Henry's and Mr Kite's. In fact, I didn't know the existence of Mr Kite's until my friends told me about it. It is now "Ruby Lounge" I believe, which also had potential too, as it had a stage with a band etc, but in its early days, we never saw many of them at all. It used to be really quiet, which we kind of liked, until they hyped up the music around 8pm onwards on a Friday night, which then kind it's an overkill, and we move on. It'll be great if someone really took note of the loudness of music, and check that it's bearable yet atmospheric.

We also like Cubana as well, and their mix of seating area away from the dancefloor and music works very well, as you can indeed enjoy the music even if you don't want to dance. There's also less room of people just hanging around making the place looking like a meat market too. It's full of people who go there for the music, or with their friends and people enjoy the atmosphere and music. Fantastic.

So, if Sylvestor is a combination of all these places, then it's a thumbs up for me too. It's definitely time for Sheffield to have a decent music place too, since we've got such a history on this. I just remember some decent Leeds clubs playing some groovy tunes, and either I've been missing the places in Sheffield, or it doesn't exist. Or rather, it didn't.

I just listened to some of his stuff on his website, and he's pretty good. His voice sounded like Daniel Beddingfield. If that is the type of music that is played, then I think it's pretty good for Sheffield, since even the Academy is providing thet Indie Rock sound now.

The more I listen, the more his voice reminds me of Daniel Bedingfield.
