is looking like a worse result that 2004 when the anti war protest was at it's highest.

Labour lose Merthyr Tydfil.

Dear god

I'm sure they won it fair and square ''it's corruption I tell you" *straps leeks to arms*

Phew - I've finally got a chance to sit down and write something about this whole thing. What a day! :)

If anyone's wondering what it's like to be elected as a City Councillor, it's a rather hectic affair!

First the votes had to be counted and verified - a process that Redrobbo has gone over in some detail so I won't repeat it here!

The candidates were all called up onto the podium - which is quite an intoxicating experience as you are looking down on a sea of people many of whom are cheering for you!

The votes for each candidate were read out and I was declared elected - I was then whisked off to the side to be sworn in by John Mothersole (which involves reading some lines from a book and then signing it).

I then had my photo taken for the Council website in front of the infamous tie-dye blue background - I think they take them just after you've won to make sure you'll actually be smiling :D

Following that I was collared by photographers from the Star and Yorkshire Post who wanted me to repeat my victory pose - presumably so they could get a better photo of it for the next editions. I've told my mum to go out and buy the papers tomorrow ;)

Then I was taken to see some student journalists who pointed a TV camera at me and did a short interview - hopefully not for consumption by too large an audience! :o

Then it was off up to the Town Hall for a big photo shoot with Nick Clegg on the front steps - with lots of curious shoppers milling about wondering what on earth we were doing. :D

All in all I am now completely knackered - but I'd like to say a big THANK YOU to everyone who voted for me and has said nice things about me on here. Hopefully over the next four years I can prove myself worthy!

Commiserations to the councillors who lost their seats and congratulation to those who won. Congratulations also to our very own Karen Southwood (a.k.a. The Chavs) who is now the proud owner of what is surely one of the biggest ever majorities in a parish council by-election - well done Karen ;)

I don't have words to express how happy I am for you and your fellow libdems Joe, well done!

Usual full list of election stats and maps at http://mdfs.net/Docs/Sheffield/Election/2008

NB: Spoilt ballot figures not listed yet, so ignore the figures in the 'UNUSED' column.

An interesting PR analysis (extrapolated to a full council): the Conservatives would have gained seats in Beighton, Crookes, Dore & Totley, Ecclesall, Fulwood and Woodhouse; the Greens a seat in Broomhill, in addition to two in Central; the BNP a seat in Firth Park, Shiregreen & Brightside and Southey; the Left Party a seat in Burngreave; and an independent in Stocksbridge & Upper Don.

Well, now we've all got our breath back ...

Congratulations to my fellow LibDems who won or retained their seats, I'm sure they're going to do us proud now they have a decent majority. The City has spoken and made its choice so I also hope that this time round, the officers of the Council give them their full support and best endeavours.

Commiserations to those who lost, especially Anne Smith, a very honourable woman and a commited and hard working Councillor, and a great loss, imo, to the Council. Also Martin Davis, ditto. Terry Fox, I may not like his political loyalties but I always thought him sincere and genuine, one of the old school. Bon voyage, and best wishes to all three.

I live in Broomhill and have often voted Green in the past - I didn't this time because they didn't bother canvassing.

Of course people have right to vote for however they want. But that doesn't stop it being sad that people have voted for a party lead by a holocaust denier, with a sidekick with an openly declared admiration for Hitler.

I voted green, btw.

I think people voted for them as a protest vote thinking they had no chance of getting in. I think that a lot of people that voted for them in Rotherham would be horrified that they actually got in.

 Hmmmmm well Cllr Anne Smith might have won if 80% of her leaflets had not been slagging of the local Lib-Dem team, towards the end I think the people up here just got fed up of it
