alchresearch
Windows XP (especially the HOME version) is known for slowing down after a few months. I've seen it happen on many PCs. Windows 2000 is a very stable alternative to use. Despite being a few years old, it usually costs more than Windows XP because in my opinion it is much better. Failing that, have a look at this site for speeding up XP: http://www.tweakxp.com

In the meantime, remove unwanted items in your Start Menu, you can always put them back later. http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm
