An interesting resource for writers.

I've found an interesting website: http://www.collectbritain.co.uk which I'm sure will be of interest to writers.

Supposing you are writing something set in a distant part of England. Looking on this site and you may find a recording of someone from that part of the world talking which will give you an idea how the natives speak. More than that, it details aspects of the local dialect which you may want to include in your character's own speech. As well as speech patterns (use of them for those, it will often refer to specific words used by the speaker e.g. clout = cloth; gan = to go.

As well as this there are items from the Illustrated London News where I read about Charlie Peace.

Of course, Scotty's use of local dialect in The Crescent is spot on from what I've read!
