pensionipper
Hi Steptoad, as apprentice explorers we decided to trace the source of the Porter, knowing full well that monsters etc. dwelled in that tunnel even though we never saw them. We had done the bit near the Arcade and parts behind Eccy Road and where Frog Walk helps it along, so we started at Hickmot Rd. and attacked the tunnel from between the 'Porter Brook' and the church. Some way in and with water splashing into our wellies and one candle, the tunnel makes a turn to the left. Thankfully one of us remembered the iron bars at the far end - a good enough excuse to turn back, though we did trace it as far as a smaller tunnel in Whitely woods. Can't think why I stopped exploring; maybe it was the lack of pay! Hi Algy - many thanks once again, I look forward to viewing things that are better than the T.V. Tooeg
I remember lunch time from King Teds it must have been games day on our way to whiteley woods, we weren't allowed out normally, tickling trout in porter brook, the tickling bit was easy, the trout were very patient, it was the last bit where you flick them out of the water I couldn't do. mypast
I am interested in seeing any pictures that may exist of the bathing pool that was in Enfield Park because in June1920 my grandfather drowned himself in it! I was surprised to see that another forum member had also sadly lost a relative in the same pool in 1930 and mentions that he has seen a photo of the pool.zc

BLITZER
Pre war memories of Endcliffe park. The stepping stones were a challenge for us lads, who could cross quickest. Inevitably we would finish up standing in the river, and squelching our way home. Sundays, nothing moved on Sundays,so on Sunday nights a whole lot of young lads and lasses would congregate at the 'Monkey racks' in Endcliffe park and socialise. A great way to meet the opposite sex in those days. Another pre war memory is,in 1938 ,workmen digging deep trenches for air raid shelters in our lovely park. It most be well over 60 years since I last had a 'walk in the park'. Far too long.
