frenchfrie
Thanks for that Melthebell, seems to confirm my first hand wanderings around the locale that actually there isn't anything much of a stone circle that I could see today. I'd still like to try and stand where this circle existed but how would I find it say from the obvious and nearby cairn or trig point?

Mathom
http://www.themodernantiquarian.com/site/1732/ http://www.sheffield.ramblers.care4free.net/SCW%20historical%20notes.htm scroll down to section 3 The Modern Antiquarian, one of the best sites on the whole t'internet! Though it seems to have been rebuilt and doesn't have one fraction as much mad stuff on Get Julian Cope's books, The Modern Antiquarian (about megalithic sites in the UK) and The Megalithic European (about sites in Ireland and Europe) - both excellent guides and full of both serious archaeology and speculative droolings from the excellent Mr Cope. Anyway, there IS a circle on Stanage Edge (there's actually two I think?) but the Nine Ladies is on Stanton Moor - fab place, a vast ancient landscape and you'll also find a nice place for a sleep on a sunny day Arbor Low is awesome too. Did some investigations on that and there are some weird things going on with the wind... There's loads of stuff round here, natural and not. I'm fond of Odin Mine at the bottom of Mam Tor, there are some cup and ring rocks in Ecclesall woods, and the freaky Lud's Church.

I have no idea what or where and I cannot fine anything definitive on the net. Also, if anyone has the time or inclination, would you be so good as to pop a link onto your post with pics or about the palces you mention. I'm loving this thread and I bet others are. Would be great to share some info which you think is accurate in your experience of the place, I'm looking forward to taking our girls out hunting for interesting places. Flooz
What are stone circles? well I realize it must be 'stones in a circle' but what do they represent and why?

There's a little about it here:http://www.themodernantiquarian.com/site/333/luds_church.html And here: http://www.nothingtoseehere.net/2006/07/luds_church.html It's supposed to be the site of the Green Chapel in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, which is spooky enough, but the actual place is veeeeery eerie. Stanton Moor: http://www.themodernantiquarian.com/site/1821/stanton_moor.html Please don't all go at once. Tip - take some water and food as it's a huge place. Arbor Low: http://www.themodernantiquarian.com/site/441/arbor_low_and_gib_hill.html If you go here, tell me if you also notice odd things with the wind...
