Is it still like that in the town centre: people crossing the street all over the place without a care in the world, mingling with the traffic? I remember driving through Sheffield with my wife just after we had got married, Christmas 1970. She had left Scotland for Canada as a small child, so she had been brought up on the idea that people only cross roads at intersections where there is a pedestrian crossing. You can get ticketed over here for jaywalking. She was petrified that I was going to run over someone as pedestrians seemed to be lined up alongside the road with one foot over the sidewalk (pavement?) ready to step out in front of traffic. Surely, with all those major thoroughfares that cross the city centre, things will be a little more orderly now?
