Remembrance/Armistice Day (11 November)

Recommended Posts

From this morning (Saturday), the Stannington Branch are selling them every day from 9am-9pm at Tesco on Infirmary Road and Morrisons on Penistone Road. Other branches are also selling in other areas, but not sure when/where, and there are also unmanned boxes throughout the S6 area.

Please dig deep - it's for a good cause!

This is not a 'troll' (whatever that is ).

It is a genuine question - what does it mean to you, personally?

Do you think about the futility and tragedy of war?

Do you think about the peace [signed on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month]?

Do you see it as remembering ALL fallen soldiers in all wars? (It is, after all, focussed on the signing on the peace that ended WWI).

Do you care about it all? If so, why?

If not, why not?

Personally, I see it as remembering the fallen of WWI (not of all wars) - it uses the 11/11/11 as the reason (see above). Any peace that it signified died in '39, just over 2 decades later. I am in awe at those who fought and died, but I struggle with the overall pointlessness of it all. Stories of thousands dying in battles that claimed a few feet.

There is nothing glorious about the futile waste of so many young men and women on both sides. If anything, it is a sombre reflection of how clearly we could not live together in peace and, sadly, it seems, despite being taught history at school, we don't seem to learn.
