AgentLesbos
SO is it true the rumour about the council buying that square opposite the closed Matilda pub abd turning it into a gay village?? As far as I know the planning application that was in was for yet more apartments, whether this has changed due to the credit crunch / fall in housing market etc I don't know. Most, if not all, gay villages that I know of consist of private businesses and have been built up over a number of years by venues opening near to each other - I would think it unlikely that the council would be buying an area with that specific intent - although I would be more than happy to be proved wrong. Actually, I also think that it would be unethical of the council to do that too. Most ethnic areas, and gay village (even in Manchester) were created because of individuals and business people who choose to do that, than to deliberately create that area by the council from the offset. That is why sometimes I do not get why there needs to be a particular area to be moulded into a particular style. Surely it would be the citizens who drive the change and make it so? I think that it's nice we do have a few decent gay bars and clubs in Sheffield, I was so surprised! I went to Dempsey recently this year, and it really reminded me of the atmosphere which were in some of the Manchester clubs too. I really really do miss that. AgentLesbos
i'm sorry but why do you need a "gay cafe" What's wrong with Starbucks etc? Also why a "gay bookshop" is Waterstones and the like not good enough for the gays? you want integration and yet you want to segregate yourself from the rest of the world by only going to a gay bar, gay bookshop. gay cafe and gay clubs! I'm sorry but people like you infuriate me I think a gay café is a great idea. I don't know the exact figures but the rate of alcohol and drug issues within the lgbt community is much higher than the rest of the population largely due to the main lgbt social spaces being bars and clubs. There are various specialist and community bookshops all over the country, not just gay bookshops, but religious, arts, political, film, dance, cooking, gardening etc so I don't see the issue. Tyranna
I know of a very successful Gay cafe with a licence for alcohol which also used to have a nightclub, but the club part closed 2 years ago, in Cork, Ireland. Its called 'The Other Place'.

Carborundum
Oh and while I am on this thread - I think the Sheffield gay scene is on the up and up - may I take the opportunity to mention two fabulous gay nights I have been at this week: 1) Pancake tuesday - pancake tossing at the Lions Lair it was brilliant and loads of fun (where were you Tyranna?) 2) Sunday night Karaoke at Sanctuary - run by a really talented lesbian KJ. It was a brilliant night with some really talented singers (where were you Tyranna?) and it seemed to get a lot of gay people out who you would not normally see out on a Sunday night - I believe it will be a regular event (in direct competition to Dempseys one - oh dear?)
