A Question about evolution

Recommended Posts

If we evolved from apes, why are there still apes?

because they're surviving just fine (up untill we started destroying their habitats), so they don't need to evolve

some things stay the same for hundreds of millions of years, if their habitat remains stable, and no new predators come in then why evolve?

Because the evolutionary tree branches at a number of points. One of these branches leads to hominids and ultimately homo sapiens sapiens, other branches lead to lemurs and bushbabies, monkeys and apes.

Very simplistically, we are believed to have evolved from a common ancestor, rather than directly from the apes that are around us today. So we are both evolved from the same species in the same way as domestic cats and tigers did, for example.

Far-right christians often think that the theory of evolution means we once had sex with apes - they don't understand it properly.

Think of the apes as your evolutionary cousins. Somewhere back when, one of your parents and one of the apes' parents had a parent who was the same person (your evolutionary grandma). So you and the apes can live on different family branches, even though you come from the same tree.
