Anyone from the Kelvin 1951 to Demolition

Thirza Street that's it,the tin garages saw a bit of action when dark descended, those were the days!.At the top of Hillsboros photo to the left of the glassworks chimney the building with the white gable end is the Cuthbert Bank Hotel!.In my late teens I nearly demolished the place,I was driving a 7ton breadvan passed it towards town when a bloody great alsation dog ran in front of me.I jammed on the brakes swerved to miss it mounted the pavement stopping inches from the pub wall!.Talk about a shock my heart nearly beat out of my chest, luckily there were no pedestrians near, bloody dogs not on leads a real menace, people say don,t swerve for them but its instinct you only have split seconds to act and it could be a child, think how you would feel if that happened!.:help::roll:

That would be Lime St/Thurza St.

Perhaps you can remember Styring's Glass Works at the bottom of Wood St.

Yes I do also remember a grocery shop on Wood Street,a chippy and a barbers

as well!.Dey,s Dancing on the corner at the top across from the Wellington pub.I recollect a funny incident one day at the top of Wood Street,in the late 50s I had restored to a fashion a 1934 Morris 8.Two friends and myself drove up to the traffic lights at the top and had to halt. When they changed to green I put down the accelerator released the clutch then nothing,no movement at all,the combination of the steep hill ancient underpowered engine plus weight of passengers result embarrassing lacking of propulsion!."Everybody out!"I commanded "And bloody push you idle swines!",over the top we went to applause from passers by,we drove away with red faces having cheered a few peoples day up for a few minutes!.:hihi::hihi::hihi:

Hi there,

Did my apprenticeship as a Joiner at the Don Joinery on the corner of Langset rd and Gertrude st Kelvin Grove, opposite Leather & Simpson motorbike place, from 1962 to 1968, then emigrated to Australia.

Fantastic times, great memories of the guys there and the work we produced.

Proud to have worked for Jack, he was a great boss.

Mick
